Demand Chick-Fil-A Stop Using Styrofoam Cups

Target: Chick-Fil-A

Goal: Force Chick-Fil-A to stop using environmentally harmful Styrofoam cups

Chick-Fil-A uses Styrofoam for their cups, a substance that releases pollutants when it is manufactured and when it decomposes. Degradation takes hundreds of years, causing high volumes of clutter. Demand Chick-Fil-A stop using Styrofoam cups in favor of a more environmentally friendly material.

Styrofoam production is the fifth largest hazardous waste producer; in the process of its creation, the air is polluted and a large amount of liquid and solid waste is created. The release of hydrocarbons during its production combined with nitrogen oxides in sunlight causes tropospheric ozone to form at ground level—a serious pollutant which has been found to weaken the immune system. Not only is Styrofoam dangerous to make, but the same harmful chemicals are released during its decomposition. Additionally, its long degradation time creates a large amount of litter which is well known for breaking apart and choking animals.

While Chick-Fil-A has started a recycling plan, it is only for a limited number of their restaurants and only in-store. Because most recycling services do not pick up Styrofoam, a large portion of customers who buy their drinks to go or through the drive through will not have the opportunity to recycle their cups at all.

Although Chick-Fil-A’s cups are reviewed positively for their insulating ability, they still pose a major health threat to people, animals, and the environment at large. By signing the petition below, you will help force Chick-Fil-A to change the material of their cups to a more environmentally friendly alternative.

Dear Mr. Cathy,

The Styrofoam cups used in your company are terrible for the environment, not only causing a large amount of clutter but also posing a threat to human and animal health. While you have implemented a recycling program in your stores, it excludes a large portion of your customers who use the drive through or order to go. Please stop the use of Styrofoam and switch your cups to a more environmentally friendly alternative.

During the production of Styrofoam, hydrocarbons are released which, when combined with nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight, create a tropospheric ozone which has been shown to damage the immune system. The same chemicals are released during the Styrofoam’s decomposition; this decomposition, however, can take hundreds of years and means that the Styrofoam becomes a large amount of litter cluttering the environment. As it is easily breakable, animals often choke on it or have it damage their digestive system. Though you have taken measures to implement a recycling system, it is not enough. Most recycling services do not pick up Styrofoam, and thus all the customers who order to go or through the drive through cannot utilize the system.

Please take action to switch to an environmentally friendly alternative and stop the usage of Styrofoam. While it serves as a better insulator than other materials, the cost to people, animals, and the environment outweighs the comfort of having a colder drink.

Styrofoam is so 1980’s and harmful to the environment. Time to join us in the 21st century. I know that will be hard for Chick-Fil-A since they have a track record of being behind the times in all issues social and environmental, but it’s never too late to move forward.
