Target: Birgitta Jonsdottir, Icelandic Legislator
Goal: Thank Birgitta Jonsdottir for offering political asylum to Edward Snowden, who revealed the National Security Agency’s widespread surveillance activity
Edward Snowden may be responsible for one of the substantial leaks in United States history: he released confidential information about the National Security Agency and the fact that they have been monitoring millions of American citizen’s private phone records. He released his name at his own request, knowing that he would face dire consequences. Snowden stated: “I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong.” He has since been residing in Hong Kong, fearing for his future.
With the trends of the Obama administration’s aggressive pursuit of whistleblowers, Snowden knows he has found himself in a massive amount of trouble. He revealed national secrets which happen to be significant violation of the public’s right to privacy. Thankfully, Birgitta Jonsdottir, an Icelandic legislator, is prepared to offer Snowden political asylum from the United States.
It is horrifying to think that the United States is becoming a nation which one has to seek political asylum from, as for years, it has been the other way around. Now, the uninhibited violation of citizens’ rights by the government is causing political figures to pursue charges, often involving life imprisonment, against whistleblowers such as Snowden.
Snowden does not deserve to spend the rest of his life in prison for exposing the National Security Agency’s violations against those it claims to protect. Sign this petition to commend Birgitta Jonsdottir for offering Snowden political asylum, and hope that she can serve as an example for other countries to do the same in the future.
Dear Birgitta Jonsdottir,
The recent situation involving NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has terrified citizens across the United States, and we fear for his safety. The Obama Administration has made clear examples of anybody who has revealed controversial information involving government action with a cryptic message: “We will put you away for life if you choose to question our practices.” Snowden has found himself among those ranks, facing a very harsh sentence for what may be the most significant leak in United States history.
For his efforts, and his devotion to the people of the United States, Snowden deserves protection. I thank you for your courage and honor in offering Snowden political asylum in your country, and fear that he may not be the last that needs to escape persecution for protecting the rights of citizens. I hope that through your example, other nations will offer their support to those who choose to question the methods of the United States Government.
