Target: Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Goal: Praise the governor of Rio de Janeiro for fighting homophobia and intolerance in the police force.
Sergio Cabral Filho, a governor of the Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil, recently hosted a seminar to raise awareness of the violence against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community in Rio. This event included top police officials and the public safety secretary, who were educated by representatives of the LGBTQ community on how to serve and protect their people. This so-called “sensitivity training” has been a focal point in Sergio’s community policing.
Violence against the LGBTQ community in Brazil has only grown in numbers in recent years, and often the police have been part of the problem. Even though the Brazilian Congress is still deciding on a bill that would make homophobia a crime, the state of Rio has been leading by example by keeping police records of hate crimes against homosexuals. Such record keeping and recently established citizen centers for the LGBTQ community have created a substantial resistance against violence and encouraged victims of hate crimes to come forward.
Governor Sergio Cabral is doing an important favor to the LGBTQ community of Rio by implementing such educational events into the practice of police officials. About 5000 police officers and detectives have already taken one of these seminars, sitting in on a series of lectures on gender diversity taught by sociologists, social workers and representatives of LGBTQ groups.
Rio de Janeiro governor’s efforts are an important initiative to help break down social bias and discrimination. He shows an example to the rest of Brazil by implementing a practice that educates police officials on the diversity of Rio’s community. Sign the petition below to praise Sergio Cabral Filho’s efforts to protect the citizens of his state and bridging the gap between police officials and the LGBTQ community of Brazil.
Dear Governor Sergio Cabral Filho,
Your efforts to bridge the gap between the police and the LGBTQ community in the state of Rio de Janeiro have been commendable. Organizing seminars for the education of police officers and detectives helps raise awareness of the different social groups living in Brazil. This practice fights bias and prejudice coming from the police and helps the citizens of Rio, and especially those of the LGBTQ community, feel safer and more trusting in the police service.
You are giving the LGBTQ community a chance to present themselves and educate the police on hate crimes against them. I extend my support for your practice and praise for showing an example to the rest of the government officials in Brazil.
