Urge Governor to Pass Energy Efficiency Bill

Target: Paul LePage, Governor of Maine

Goal: Increase energy efficiency and lower energy costs in Maine

Maine has recently been trying to increase energy efficiency and lower energy costs, but governor Paul LePage may veto a bill that will could just that. The bill is aimed at lowering electricity costs, which is vital in a state where 90% of homes and 63% of the state generate electricity from oil and gas.

Last year the state saved over $76 million in costs from wind and solar implementation, and governor LePage asked his state’s government to push forward with research this year. The bill will also help low-income families switch to more affordable and efficient heating systems. The bill has passed Senate and on its way through the House, although LePage specifically states he will veto if it reaches his desk in the current form.

LePage believes the bill will lift the cap on renewable generators and scale back the state’s high-reaching wind power goals, which would allow Canada to receive energy credits. The Governor believes this will make Maine’s standard “watered down” and the incentive for wind energy companies to continue growth in Maine would likely end.

Ultimately, this bill is not a wise business move and shows that the governor is not putting the citizens of Maine first, which is his primary duty. Petition governor Paul LePage to pass the bill and give the citizens of Maine, the U.S and world a cleaner place to thrive.

Dear Governor LePage,

As a representative of Maine’s citizens, it is your primal duty to always put them first. The packaged L.D. 1559 will not only cut energy costs by $200 million annually, but it is a small step in loosening the belt on oil dependency. The irreversible damage oil and it pollutants do to the planet is a crisis requiring more attention than what is more economically beneficial and business-savvy at the moment.

Approximately one billion dollars has been spent on wind energy research and implementation in Maine since 2004. This job creation made way for $375 in construction wages to your constituents and $750 million in tax foundation increase for Maine’s government. “The attempts by LePage and his allies to dismantle Maine’s RPS represent an embrace of a corporatist approach to Maine’s energy policy will have serious, damaging consequences for Maine consumers and our environment,” your Senate majority leader was quoted after hearing of your intention to veto. Pass this bill with future generations of mankind, the health of your constituents and yours in mind; the rest of the world will extend a hand in praise of the wise decision.
