Thank Ghana for Cracking Down on Illegal Gold Mining

Target: Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahema

Goal: Eradicate illegal mining in Ghana

Illegal mining in Ghana, particularly for gold, has been growing at an alarming rate with foreign nationals entering the country to pursue operations. Intensive excavations leave the surrounding environment in detrimental conditions, especially valuable water sources. Ghanaian authorities recently arrested 168 Chinese nationals during an illegal mining crackdown and should be commended and supported.

The low level of skill and investment needed for gold mining operations coupled with high potential profits attract foreign nationals to partake in illegal mining in Ghana. According to a Chinese news organization, over 50,000 Chinese gold miners have traveled to Ghana since 2005 with a majority coming from an impoverished county in the Guangxi province. Although this issue is complex and deeply rooted in socio-economic challenges, illegal mining is too harmful for the environment to be ignored and robs Ghana of its natural resources. Illegal mining in Ghana is so rampant that the state is unable to provide clean drinking water for most of the communities due to the rising cost of cleaning up water sources.

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahema established a high-level taskforce to send a clear signal to the illegal mining sector, demonstrating that the government will not allow such illegal activities to cause conflict, dislocation, environmental degradation, and unemployment. The 168 Chinese nationals partaking in illegal mining operations have been detained and will be processed for court. President Mahema’s tough regulations to protect the environment and the Ghanaian communities should be commended and supported.

Dear President Mahema,

Illegal mining is a serious and growing issue in Ghana with disastrous environmental, health, and economic implications. The problem has worsened as foreign nationals learned of Ghana’s abundance in natural resources, particularly gold, and came to the country to pursue illegal operations. I wanted to take the time to commend you for cracking down on the illegal mining sector and holding these criminals accountable for their actions.

Often times governments promulgate regulations but fail to take the proper steps to enforce them. Thanks to the taskforce you created, 168 Chinese nationals responsible for illegal gold mining were arrested. I wanted to express my support for your dedication to eradicate illegal mining.
