Target: Family Research Council Vice President Jerry Boykin
Goal: Condemn absurdly untrue anti-gay statements about rape in the military
Vice President Jerry Boykin of the Family Research Council (an anti-gay hate group and political lobbyist organization) recently slandered gays and lesbians in the military with a claim as deplorable as it was absurd. Faced with the depressing prospect of an unprecedented spike in sexual assaults in the US military, Boykin has come to the least sensible conclusion imaginable: that the rise in heterosexual military men raping or otherwise sexually harassing women is the fault of gay servicemen and women serving openly in the military. That’s right; Boykin laid the blame of heterosexual assaults upon the “sexualization of our military with social engineering.” Not only did Boykin fail to explain how letting service members to be who they already were constitutes “social engineering,” he also conclusively failed to link open homosexuals in the military to a rise in heterosexual rape and harassment.
It strains credulity to be told that openly homosexual military members would engender a drastic rise in heterosexual sexual assaults in the armed services. It would seem that Boykin’s assertion is that what he calls the “sexualization” of the military services inevitably leads to a hyper-sexualization of all members of the military—even members whose sexual identity was already accepted prior to the end of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell procedure in the military. Unfortunately for Boykin, he fails to provide any actual evidence of this alleged connection.
The recent spike in sexual assault allegations in the military is disturbing enough, but for people like Boykin to interject political polemics into the issue is tantamount to the most shameless form of politicizing. Please sign the petition below to condemn Jerry Boykin’s inflammatory comments, insist he retract them, and propound a realistic assessment of sexual harassment in the US military.
Dear Jerry Boykin:
I am writing to decry your recent insensitive and inflammatory comments about the rise of sexual assault in the US military. Your claim that the rise in rape and sexual assault is the fault of openly gay and lesbian members of the military is as absurd as it is incendiary. Clearly you are grasping at straws to link two entirely disparate events together because of your own political agenda.
I demand that you retract your statements, apologize, and withdraw from any comments about the rise in sexual assault in the US military that do not have bearing in actual fact.
