Applaud Transgender Navy Seal for Coming Out

Target: Navy Seal Kristin Beck

Goal: Applaud Beck for coming out as transgender woman

Kristin Beck, formerly Chris Beck, is a Navy Seal who proudly served her country for two decades and recently came out as a transgender woman. In her upcoming memoir, Warrior Princess: A U.S. Navy SEAL’s Journey to Coming out Transgender, Beck weaves the narrative of spending years in the turmoil of living in the wrong biological body, while simultaneously bravely fighting for the freedom and liberty of her country. The stories of struggle of both military veterans and the transgendered are compelling enough, but for someone to embody both at the same time is a stunning story of courage and character.

Beck points out that the 2011 repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell freed gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military, but failed to extend that right to transgender individuals. Were Beck to enlist today, the woman who spent decades serving her country would be declined on the basis of her gender identity. This is a stark reminder of the fact that the struggle for LGBT equality does not begin or end with the rights of gays and lesbians alone; as same-sex marriage and gay rights continue in their political momentum, it is crucial to remember the struggles and grievances of the transgender community as well.

Kristin Beck should serve as an inspiration to the upcoming generation of soldiers in her bravery and perseverance against not only the enemy, but the distance between her assigned gender and her true gender identity. Please sign the petition below to applaud Kristin Beck for her courageous act of coming out as transgender, and to thank her for her noble actions in the service of her country.

Dear Kristin Beck,

I would like to applaud your courage both in serving your country bravely for two decades, and in struggling with your gender identity at the same time. Yours is truly a story that should demonstrate the struggles of the transgendered, both in the military specifically and in society in general. Thank you for sharing your compelling story in the upcoming memoir, Warrior Princess: A U.S. Navy SEAL’s Journey to Coming out Transgender.

Ms. Beck, I hope that you can serve as an example both for soldiers and for transgender individuals. Like you, I hope that the victorious gay rights movement does not leave the transgender community behind, and I believe you epitomize the importance of the transgendered to American society. Thank you for your service and your example. I wish you the best in all your endeavors.
