Target: American Electric Power CEO, Nick Akins
Goal: Demand power plants drop lawsuits and stop polluting our air
Mercury is a deadly neurotoxin that can cause permanent damage to fetuses, infants and toddlers. Arsenic, mercury, zinc and other power plant byproducts end up contaminating the fish, fruits and vegetables we eat, causing cancer rates to skyrocket. The Environmental Defense Fund has spent over one million hours researching mercury and its effects, concluding, “…exposure to mercury in any form places a heavy burden on the biochemical machinery within cells of all living organisms.”
After a 21-year fight between the public and coal-burning plants, the EPA finally announced an official Mercury and Air Toxics Standards rule that power plant companies would have to abide by. This victory did not last long, as the power plant companies wasted no time jumping on a law suit against the standards. Who would sue to protect their right to spew toxins into our air?
The power plant utilities are spending millions of ratepayer dollars to tie up the important mercury regulations in court. This means many more years of toxins being spewed into the atmosphere, into our ecosystem, our food and eventually our bodies. In 2012, American Electric Power spent over seven million lobbying Congress; these companies are mega-rich and can easily figure ways to cleanly produce electricity. Demand power plants to drop lawsuits and lend big helping hand in making the air more breathable for us and all of our children.
Dear Nick Akins,
The science is there: toxic emissions spewing from coal-fired power plants such as yours settle into lakes, vegetation and eventually on our dinner plates. After a million hours of research, the EDF concluded, “… minimizing all mercury exposure is essential to improving human, wildlife and ecosystem health because exposure to mercury in any form places a heavy burden on the biochemical machinery within cells of all living organisms.” This is an issue no one’s food or children is safe from; mercury is proven to cause brain damage, cancer and other seriously fatal ailments in humans.
Every year 300,000 infants are born at risk because of their mother’s exposure to toxic mercury pollution; coal plants are one of the largest sources of mercury pollution. To put it in perspective, a teaspoon of mercury can contaminate a normal sized lake. Instead of using millions to curtail lawsuits, find a more environmentally stable way to produce energy and save our planet from a speedy destruction. The world’s and your own grandchildren will thank you graciously.
