Target: U.S. President Barack Obama
Goal: Commend the Obama administration for continual support of LGBT community and equality
On the eve of June 1st, 2011, President Obama released a Presidential Proclamation declaring June as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride month. Since Obama has been in office, he has taken strong efforts to support the LGBT community, striving for equality. In honor of this month as LGBT Pride month, I encourage you to take a moment to review the great progress that America has achieved in working towards equality, as well as the work that remains ahead of us.
During his first term, President Obama repealed the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy of the U.S. military, voiced his support for same-sex marriage, and ensured hospital visitation rights for LGBT patients. Additionally, he ordered the federal government to extend key benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees, signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, ended gender identity discrimination in the federal government, and declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and no longer valid in court. Obama has been a strong advocate of restoring sexual orientation and gender identity to the definition of human rights, demonstrating consistency across the numerous programs and acts initiated and supported by his administration.
At the 57th Presidential Inauguration, President Obama stated that “our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law.” For the successes of his first term and his unwavering dedication to the LGBT community, President Obama deserves recognition for his determination to achieve true equality in America and in the world.
Dear President Obama,
In honor of LGBT Pride month, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the efforts that your administration has taken in supporting the LGBT community and striving for true equality. Your first term is marked with numerous landmark achievements for the LGBT community, guiding America towards true equality that includes sexual orientation and gender identity. Although we still have a long road ahead of us, America has made great progress during your first term thanks to your unwavering dedication to equality and LGBT rights.
I applaud you for your integrity and bravery in confronting a nationally controversial issue without hesitation or reluctance, and I urge you to continue your efforts throughout your second term and as an influential political figure.
