Target: Congressman Buck McKeon
Goal: Stop attempts to keep Guantanamo operational
Congressman Buck McKeon authored a bill detailing the military budget for the upcoming fiscal year — totaling $638 billion. $86 billion of this would go to war costs alone, with the remainder to go towards issues in the military such as the rapidly growing issue of rape, missile and defense research, etc. The bill also proposes renovations of $247 million dollars towards Guantanamo bay.
Obama has attempted to live up to his original promise of closing down the prison, stating that “to the greatest extent possible, we will transfer detainees who have been cleared to go to other countries. Where appropriate, we will bring terrorists to justice in our courts and military justice system. And we will insist that judicial review be available for every detainee,” yet this bill is attempting to block the necessary funds for transportation of a number of inmates — many of which are active participants in the ongoing hunger strike. Yet the majority of Congressman McKeon’s budget for construction at Guantanamo would improve facilities not for inmates, but for U.S. personnel whose living quarters have been regarded as “pretty questionable.” This bill is a farce, and it serves as nothing more than an attempt to keep Guantanamo operational.
This is an enormous waste of the government budget, and this prison needs to be closed. Sign this petition to show disdain for the bill, and insist that Congressman Buck McKeon modify his proposal to include the closing of Guantanamo Bay.
Dear Buck McKeon,
Your bill regarding the military budget serves the purpose of continuing operations and the notorious Guantanamo Bay prison. Not only does your bill propose spending in excess of $247 million for construction in the prison — an outrageous number for something that should be shut down — it does not focus on the horrific treatment of detainees. Your proposed construction at Guantanamo is geared towards providing United States personnel with improved living quarters. The Armed Services Committee that you are a part of should focus on removing both inmates and U.S. forces from the prison, rather than keeping them there.
The prison is not only an atrocity in regards to human rights, as we’ve seen in the past, but an enormous draw on the already inflated military budget. I implore you, revise your bill to allocate funds to the closure of Guantanamo Bay. This prison is a blight on our nation’s record: allowing it to continue to operate is a disgrace.
