Target: Sonny Ramaswamy, Director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture
Goal: Urge the 4H Club to auction livestock only to buyers who don’t use slaughterhouses
The 4H Club, a youth development organization that teaches leadership, responsibility and life skills has benefited over 6.5 million members aged 5-21. It focuses on preparing members for careers in agriculture, science, and engineering. The club is administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, a division of the United States Department of Agriculture. 4H is especially popular in rural areas, given the abundance of farms.
The 4H Club also holds frequent livestock auctions at county fairs. That’s to be expected, as it is run by the Department of Agriculture. However, the animals are often auctioned off to supermarkets that immediately send the animals to inhumane slaughterhouses. At these slaughterhouses, animals are stunned and hung on “bleed rails” to die. Often the stun gun does not work and animals are conscious while being hung upside down and bleeding to death. Pigs are dunked into scalding water to soften their skins. There are no laws whatsoever to regulate the humane killing of birds, so they are hung shackled by their legs and electrocuted in water.
Since the 4H Club has historically been known for teaching new agricultural ideas to youth, it is time for the organization to champion animal rights. Organic farms let animals live on pastures instead of in pens, and kill them humanely when their time comes. Urge Sonny Ramaswamy, the director of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, to have 4H clubs auction only to buyers who don’t use slaughterhouses.
Dear Dr. Ramaswamy,
We are disheartened that the 4H Club auctions off livestock to supermarkets that use slaughterhouses. The 4H Club was developed to teach new agricultural practices to rural youth in order to ensure a positive future for the field.
Animal abuse on farms is a bipartisan issue: a ban on pig gestational crates in New Jersey was supported by 92% of Democrats and 89% of Republicans, Last year the Senate version of this bill passed 34-1. (NJ.com)
People hate animal abuse. And the 4H Club would gain immeasurable respect if it only auctioned animals to farms that don’t use slaughterhouses. Please encourage 4H clubs to auction animals only to farms that don’t use slaughterhouses.
