A salon in New York City, Wanda’s European Skin Care Center, has no shame in sexualizing young girls for profit. The salon boasts on its website that children as young as eight years old can get discounted waxing for “virgin” hair. Wanda Stawczyk, owner of the salon, told the New York Post ‘pre-teen waxing business is booming’ and ‘in 10 years waxing children will be like taking them to the dentist or putting braces on their teeth.’ Is this the society we want to live in, where the objectification of our children is as common as cavities? This salon is teaching our children that they need to modify their bodies in order to be attractive, and moreover, valued. Virgin waxing encourages superficiality and promotes a negative perception of body image and natural body hair, which can be detrimental to a young child’s self-esteem and psychological well-being.
The Wanda Skin Care website endorses discounts on bikini waxing procedures to girls with “virgin” hair. This disturbing trend, called “virgin waxing,” is when mothers take their pre-pubescent child to a salon that removes any/all trace of pubic follicles before it becomes hair. Wanda’s website defines this appalling procedure unashamedly on their website: ‘Virgin-waxing for children 8 years old and up who have never shaved before. Virgin hair can be waxed so successfully that growth can be permanently stopped in just 2 to 6 sessions. Save your child a lifetime of waxing…” Not only does this practice warp children’s idea of beauty, but it also permanently takes away the child’s choice to look the way they want. At eight years old, if our mommy tells us we are only pretty when we shave, of course we will shave. But as we mature, we develop our own opinions. To take away someone’s freedom to be natural, and manicure their body the way they want, is a violation of human rights. Wanda’s salon forthrightly ignores these damaging effects, solely for economic growth.
Wanda’s European Skin Care Center should take down its destructive advertisement. The commercialization of this practice normalizes unnecessary beauty procedures for children. Wanda’s salon advertisements shamelessly teach eight year olds they must distort their bodies in order to be beautiful. They encourage moms to take away their daughters’ right to beautify their pubescent bodies the way they please. This advertisement negatively impacts the children targeted and commonizes the sexualization of young girls.

Your advertisement of discounted bikini waxing to pre-pubescent girls is appalling. These young girls should not be subjected to the objectification of their bodies. The reasons for this procedure are purely aesthetic, and you should be ashamed for enticing them with your ads of superficiality at a disturbingly early age. These advertisements brainwash girls into believing they are not naturally beautiful and that true self-esteem can only be realized through multiple alterations of their appearance. You are telling these girls to keep their bodies looking pre-pubescent because that is what men want. This is harmful for a child’s mental health creating self-worth based on vanity, low self-confidence, and a negative body image.
Also, your procedures are non-medical and permanent. Mothers of these children should not be responsible for determining the way their daughters’ privates will look for the rest of their lives. Although the ‘pre-teen waxing industry is booming,’ I hope you can find the humility to acknowledge these adverse effects and remove your advertisement for virgin waxing.
