Support Identity Protection of Reporter Sources

IMG_1234

Target: United States Congress

Goal: Allow reporters to protect the identity of their sources to conserve freedom of the press

Recently, President Obama’s administration pushed a bill to Congress that will allow reporters to protect the identity of their sources. This bill, referred to as a reporter shield law, will ensure that prosecutors will pursue every possible avenue before requesting that reporters reveal their sources. Passing this bill will allow reporters to present accurate information to the public as their sources will be protected from prosecution.

The bill is designed to protect reporters who expose government scandals. Recently, the Department of Justice secretly used telephone records of nearly 100 reporters to find an anonymous source who leaked government information. This abuse of government power leads to mistrust between reporters and sources, and will lead to government corruption and scandals not being exposed. The bill will protect reporters and their sources by requiring prosecutors to pursue other means of obtaining information without questioning reporters. Before the prosecutor may subpoena a reporter’s source, the court must agree that all other options have been exhausted.

This bill must be passed. The public has a right to free press, and passing this bill will ensure this right. The government should not be allowed to bully reporters and their sources to hide scandals and corruption. By supporting and passing this bill, Congress will show that they understand the importance of this freedom. Tell Congress that they must support and pass this bill.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear United States Congress:

Recently, President Obama’s administration pushed a bill to you that will allow reporters to protect the identity of their sources. This is in response to a recent act by the Department of Justice. They secretly seized phone records to find an anonymous government leaker. Acts such as this spread mistrust between reporters and sources, and can threaten the public’s freedom of information.

I ask you support and pass this bill. The public’s right to freedom of information should not be impeded by sources fearing punishment. By supporting and passing this bill, you will show that you understand the importance of this freedom. Reporters must be free to give the public accurate information without fear of retribution.

Sincerely,
