Target: Christopher Luxon, CEO of Air New Zealand
Goal: Permanently ban the shipment of shark fins on Air New Zealand aircraft
New Zealand airline company, Air New Zealand, has prohibited shark fin shipments on its planes. Air New Zealand is the latest airline to stop transporting shark fins to Hong Kong, where millions of inhumanely killed sharks are bought and sold for their fins. Shark fins are considered a delicacy and most commonly used to make Chinese soup. Encourage Air New Zealand to make the shark fin ban permanent to decrease fin transport save the shark population.
While once reserved for Chinese emperors and nobility, shark fin soup has remained a popular choice at weddings and banquets. Since dried shark fin is the most expensive type of seafood, there is a huge incentive for fishermen to kill large quantities of sharks solely for their fins and dispose of the rest. Over 70 million sharks die each year from having their fins cut off while still alive for profit.
After local media exposed airborne shark fin shipments, Air New Zealand placed a temporary ban on all shark fin cargo while the shipments were investigated. By prohibiting the transport of fins to Hong Kong, where over 10,000 tons of fins are traded each year, restaurants will be forced to take shark fin soup off their menus. Many prominent hotels and restaurants in Hong Kong have already removed the soup from their menus due to successful anti-cruelty campaigns.
Airlines must be aware of the cargo they are carrying and how that cargo is impacting the environment. Sign the below petition to urge Air New Zealand, and all other airlines, to enforce permanent bans on shark fin shipments.[gravityform id=1 name=Signthe Petition: ajax=false]
Dear Mr. Luxon,
Thank you for placing a temporary ban on shark fin shipments on all of your aircraft. Even though it can be difficult to monitor dried food shipments, you must ensure that your staff is trained to stop fin shipments before they cross borders. The lives of sharks around the world depend upon the tourism, shipping, and hospitality industries to stop the cruel practice of shark fin trade at the source.
I am urging you to train your airline staff to detect shark fin shipments and prevent them from being transported on your planes. It is time to stop the senseless killings of sharks in international waters. Please do your part and refuse to ship shark fin products.
