Shut Down Shanghai Wild Animal Park for Killing Monkey

Target: Han Changfu, Minister of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China

Goal: Shut down Shanghai Wild Animal Park for forcing animals to perform unnatural acts for entertainment

Zoos can be great places to care for endangered animals, ensuring that the species survives. However, some animal exhibits hurt the animals more than they help them. A monkey was mauled the other day by a stunned wild bear at Shanghai Wild Animal Park.

Shanghai Wild Animal Park is much like a circus in that it makes the animals perform unnatural acts to entertain spectators. In this instance, zookeepers forced a monkey and two black bears to ride bicycles in a race. The bicycles that the monkey and one of the bears were riding collided, stunning the bear. The bear attacked the monkey, clamping its jaws around it. It dropped the monkey a minute later, leaving the monkey lying motionless on the ground in front of hundreds of horrified spectators.

There was a video of the incident, but it was condemned. Says Will Travers, CEO of the animal advocacy group Born Free Foundation, “Horrific and depraved – words cannot describe this brutal foolishness. The circus should be closed. The animals should go to Sanctuaries. The operators should be arrested for cruelty and neglect.” A spokesman for PETA also commented on the atrocious treatment of the animals. Representatives for the Shanghai Wild Animal Park failed to answer inquiries.

This gladiator-style animal torture should have gone the way of the Romans. Urge Chinese Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu to shut down Shanghai Wild Animal Park as soon as possible.

Dear Dr. Changfu,

We commend your work with the Shanghai Zoo. It is one of the biggest and most beautiful zoos in the world, and provides sanctuary for thousands of animals and entertainment for millions of people.

In contrast, the actions of Shanghai Wild Animal Park are despicable. Much like a circus, they force animals to engage in unnatural sports, such as bike racing, for spectator entertainment. Recently a bear killed a monkey when their bikes collided during one of these races. We urge you to continue your good work by shutting down Shanghai Wild Animal Park and its brutal shows.

Bears riding bikes is not something that they do in the wild! Monkees, too! They don’t ride in the wild!?! Shanghai Zoo should be ashamed! This is a disgrace!!:(

  3. Gabriella Taylor Gabriella Taylor says:

I’d like to “shut down” the idiots who watch such “entertainment.”

  4. Alice Knight says:

I agree with Gabriella Taylor. If people didn’t view these abusive videos perhaps they would not exist. After saying that sometimes we do need to be made aware of such violence and abuse no matter if it makes us break down, weep and induce anger it’s these feelings which may provoke an individual to want to make a change for the better.
I think circuses, carnivals and street-side venues whatever you want to call them, should be considered a long-distant memory of our ignorant past. There isn’t any need for them to exist. The owners, trainers and participants should invest their time and energies into other careers. As for the animals, their needs of compassion, love and living the rest of their lives in sanctuaries.
