Praise Software Company for Hiring Autistic Employees

Goal: Praise SAP AG for pledging to hire 650 autistic employees by 2020

Autism is a disorder that affects one’s interpersonal skills, making it difficult for individuals with the condition to socialize and communicate with others. Since autism is usually diagnosed at the early age of three, people with this disorder can receive effective behavioral training to help them adapt to society. However, the majority of people with autism does not get hired because of their condition and is forced to live off of benefits. SAP AG, a multinational business-management software firm from Germany, announced its new goal of hiring autistic workers. The company’s willingness to hire people with autism and look at the benefits of the conditions for its workforce as opposed to the negative side effects of the condition should be praised.

SAP announced that by 2020, it plans on hiring 650 autistic employees. That number will make up one percent of the firm’s workforce. The firm currently has 11 employees and believes that it has a place for autistic people to explore their abilities and contribute to the company. People with autism are known to be meticulous and more logical, which could help with software development. If this company’s program can help influence other logistics firms to follow suit, the employment rate for autistic people could increase significantly.

Friedrich Nolte from Germany’s largest organization, Autismus Deutschland that works to help people with autism, stated, “This is the first major company to make such a commitment, and from that point of view alone it’s groundbreaking for sufferers of autism. We will be watching closely to see that they follow through and also looking to see that these workers are not being exploited.

If the company follows through, this could be the start of better work programs for autistic people. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one percent of the population has this condition and Nolte says that only about five to six percent of people with an autistic spectrum disorder gets hired. He added that of the percentage of autistic people working, only about 20 percent of them are people with the milder forms of autism, such as Asperger’s syndrome. He believes that this program can increase that percentage three-fold.

On top of this hiring goal, SAP states that it will also hire and train job coaches who will act as mediators between autistic employees and other employees since communication is a known symptom of the condition. SAP’s efforts and goals in helping autistic people must be praised.

I would like to commend you and SAP AG for pledging to hire 650 autistic employees by 2020. Instead of stereotyping people with this condition, you are willing to give them a chance to work with your company. People with autism are known to perform well in tasks that require logical thinking. By acknowledging their advantages as opposed to their disadvantages, you are giving them an outlet to use their talents.

I am aware that this hiring program benefits both the company and the autistic community and I hope that your company can be a thriving place for autistic people. The fact that you will give these jobs to autistic people who are qualified could change the way autistic people are viewed. It could lead to a better employment rate and a better overall quality of life for the autistic community.
