Target: Medea Benjamin
Goal: Applaud Medea Benjamin for her protest at President Obama’s recent counterterrorism address.
President Obama’s recent counterterrorism address, the first major one of his second term, took place at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. The President was telling the audience that Congress was preventing him from closing Guantanamo Bay when a woman named Medea Benjamin interrupted the President. She correctly informed him that as the commander-in-chief, President Obama has the power to close Guantanamo Bay without needed “permission.”
President Obama was clearly flustered by the outspoken Benjamin, author of “Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control.” Medea Benjamin went on to demand that the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay be freed, and asked questions about the continued hunger strike occurring in the prison. She continued to beg the President to shut down the prison until she was escorted out of the room.
Medea Benjamin’s protest and actions at the National Defense University were commendably brave. She gave voices to matters that needed to be spoken about, and refused to stand down in the face of the President and his Secret Service agents. She made valid, legitimate points that President Obama was unable to answer satisfactorily. The media later wrote Benjamin off as a “heckler” and called her rude. Benjamin responded by stating, to CNN, “I think killing innocent people with drones is rude. I think keeping innocent people in detention for 11 years is rude. I think not respecting the lives of Muslim people who are killed is rude. There are a lot of rude things about our policies. Speaking out is actually not rude.”
Sign the petition below to applaud Medea Benjamin for her bravery.
Dear Ms. Benjamin,
Recently, during President Obama’s counterterrorism talk at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., you made the brave choice to stand up in protest. You interrupted the President’s speech and pointed out truths that he could not deny. You demanded action. You did not allow yourself to be intimidated. Your protest was admirable and commendable, and I am writing today to offer my thanks and support.
When President Obama promised to shut down Guantanamo Bay, many of us expected that he would follow through. Now, years later, we continue to wait for the day that the prison finally ceases to exist. In the meantime, we are forced to accept that our country supports drone warfare, a technique that does more harm than good. At the same time, President Obama speaks out against terrorists and condemns their actions, displaying a remarkable amount of hypocrisy. It is undeniably time to stand up for what we believe in. Thank you for speaking out about topics that are too often brushed under the rug.
