Demand Mandatory Disclosure of Harmful Fracking Chemicals

frackme

Target: President Obama

Goal: Require drillers to disclose all chemicals being used for fracking and stop allowing trade-secret exemptions for the oil and gas industry.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under the Obama Administration has decided to adopt the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) model bill that lays out polices for disclosing fracking chemical fluid on U.S. public lands. ALEC is a 98% corporate-funded bill that was written largely by ExxonMobil. The policy uses an online database for fracking disclosure that has failed to hold companies accountable in the past and is an insufficient strategy to protect the public against the harmful impacts of fracking. Standards for fracking need to require that all chemicals being used are disclosed and that the process is transparent to the public.

The “Disclosure of Hydraulic Fracturing Fluid Composition Act” is a bill under ALEC, which the New York Times revealed was written by ExxonMobil . This bill sets the standards for chemical fluid disclosure of fracking by making use of FracFocus.org’s voluntary online chemical disclosure database. FracFocus is a failed effort by the Obama Administration to address the poor standards for fracking chemical disclosure that came out under the Bush Administration and allowed fracking chemicals to remain a “trade secret.” However, FracFocus is does not provide any more transparency or accountability. When FracFocus began operating in 2011 through the end of last year, energy companies failed to list more than two out of every five fracked wells in eight U.S. states. There should be a mandated rather than voluntary approach to transparency in fracking chemicals.

FracFocus is a farce created so that industry can claim they are doing something in terms of disclosure, when in fact they are revealing the bare minimum of information. The administration is putting the American public’s health at risk by allowing polluters to withhold information on chemicals they use. The ALEC bill and other fracking acts must require drillers to disclose all chemicals being used for fracking and discontinue to allow trade-secret exemptions for the oil and gas industry.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama,

Part of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) model bill that was recently adopted by the Bureau of land management includes a bill to set the standards for disclosure of chemical fracking fluids in the United States. This “Disclosure of Hydraulic Fracturing Fluid Composition Act” was written largely by ExxonMobil and allows trade-secret exemptions for the oil and gas industry. The bill calls for the use of FracFocus.org’s voluntary online chemical disclosure database, which does not allows for nearly enough transparency or accountability in accessing information on fracking chemicals. This is an insufficient strategy to protect the public against the harmful impacts of fracking.

When FracFocus began operating in 2011 through the end of last year, energy companies failed to list more than two out of every five fracked wells in eight U.S. states. FracFocus is a farce and The ALEC bill and other fracking accountability legislation must require drillers to disclose all chemicals being used for fracking and discontinue exemptions for the oil companies.

Sincerely,

Please do more than consider the harmful effects of chemicals to the people! Stop the chemicals before they get to the people!

Wolves are essential for health of nearly all wild herds of their prey animals. Evidence for this was produced by the late Canadian zoologist Farley Mowatt. Wolves suffer from a poor nursery tale regime wwhich unfortunately seems to impress too many people who have not studied the facts properly.
