Target: Justice Department
Goal: Disbar former U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke for lying to the Justice Department about leaking documents
In 2011, Dennis Burke was forced to resign from his post due to fall out from the Fast & Furious scandal. The Fast & Furious operation was a botched attempt to track arms in Mexico that resulted in the loss of over 2,000 guns over the Mexican border to criminal hands. Two years later, Burke is in trouble again. He has lied to the Justice Department, and no matter his rank or his party, that cannot be tolerated.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) was in charge of operation Fast & Furious two years ago. ATF Agent John Dodson exposed the operation and its failure. Now, Dennis Burke has been accused of leaking documents in an attempt to discredit Dodson, in retaliation to Dodson’s whistle-blowing of the Fast & Furious operation and in the hopes of undermining his authority. When asked by the Justice Department about whether or not he leaked the documents, he lied. Perfidious politicians should not participate in politics. A whistle-blower is someone who puts his career on the line because he believes injustice has been committed. Such actions should be encouraged, not suppressed. Such people should be praised, not discredited.
America is built on the freedom of the press, and the balance of power between the people’s government and the people. The press balance the government—whistle-blowers balance the government, because lies and corruption cannot be tolerated in the land of the free. If Dennis Burke did not want to be disbarred, he should not have lied to the Justice Department.
Please support the disbarring of Dennis Burke, so that all politicians will make sure to think twice before they decide to lie the government.
Dear Justice Department,
As you consider whether or not Dennis Burke should be disbarred, please remember that what you do in this situation will affect how the American people will see you. If Burke faces no consequences for his dishonesty, then you should not be surprised if you begin to hear lies more often. Unless the government is protecting the lives and welfare of its people, lies are absolutely unacceptable. You trusted Dennis Burke to tell you the truth. As you are a representative body, he not only betrayed your trust, but the people’s trust when he didn’t.
This issue has nothing to do with party and everything to do with honesty and integrity. Leaking documents in order to discredit a whistle-blower is bad in and of itself, but that’s not nearly as bad as lying about it to your government about it.
