Target: Raphael Etenyi, Founder of the Hamomi Children’s Centre
Goal: Thank Raphael Etenyi for providing education and opportunity to orphaned and vulnerable children
Life is hard in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Drought, land distribution inequality and population expansion have forced once-sustaining rural farmers to squat in enormous ‘settlements’ of devastatingly poor individuals, and in a place where food and water are hard to come by, opportunities like a decent education are rarer still. It is amidst this chaos that the Hamomi Children’s Centre, a soulful and well-organized nonprofit, has taken root.
The Hamomi Children’s Centre offers orphaned and vulnerable children the education, protection, and sustenance they need to change their lives. Featuring a primary school entirely free to its pupils, Hamomi also provides comprehensive care to all those enrolled in its programs. Nairobi’s vulnerable children are faced with complex problems, and Hamomi offers the complex solution necessary to ensure healthy and safe students.
This nonprofit is unique in several ways. The school itself is managed and taught by members of the community it serves – this offers jobs to local adults and strengthens community bonds. The Hamomi Children’s Centre is also remarkably resourceful. The average nonprofit must spend 20 percent of donations on overhead and organizational costs. Hamomi’s grassroots approach cuts that figure in half to 10 percent.
Moving forward, Hamomi is working to be free from donations; purchasing land on which to build a self-sustaining profitable school, running social businesses to create jobs and sustain its programs, and investing in university scholarships for its oldest alumni to ensure their complete education. By not turning a blind eye to any of its students’ obstacles, this nonprofit is a rising star in a sea of hardship.
The benefits Hamomi provides are many, but its overall goal is the same: to develop unfortunate youths and the areas around them into healthy and hopeful communities. Sign this petition and support the Hamomi Children’s Centre‘s truly life-changing venture.
