Target: John Roach, Texas judge
Goal: Condemn Judge Roach for attempting to keep a lesbian couple from living together because of his bigoted viewpoints
By enforcing what he calls a “morality clause”, a Texas judge is preventing a lesbian from living with her partner of three years. The clause that is part of her divorce papers forbids anyone who is not married to the woman, Carolyn Compton, from visiting her home past 9pm. Since Texas does not allow gays or lesbians to get married, this prevents Compton from living with her partner as long as she maintains custody of her children. Condemn this Texas judge for keeping a family apart in order to reinforce bigotry.
Judge John Roach, a Republican who presides over a state trial court in McKinney, Texas, recently enforced this “morality clause” after learning that that Carolyn Compton was living with her partner, Page Price. Judge Roach’s reasoning for enforcing this morality clause was because Compton and Price are not married, but it is impossible for them to marry because Texas neither allows gay couples to marry in Texas nor recognizes gay marriages that were performed in other states.
This decision not only negatively impacts Compton and Price, but has a huge impact on Compton’s children. If the morality clause is enforced, the two children will effectively be left with only one parent, because Price’s ex-husband rarely visits and is potentially dangerous. He was charged with stalking Compton but was able to plead to a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespassing. Since Price has been living in Compton’s house up until now, the children have become used to having two parents take care of and love them on a daily basis. Now, Compton faces having to forfeit living with her partner or risking the loss of custody of her children.
This “morality clause” is an extreme form of discrimination and has the capacity to tear a family apart on the basis of bigoted ideals. Judge Roach’s actions are homophobic and cruel. Condemn him for his attempts to destroy a family because he does not support equal rights.
Dear Judge Roach,
Your recent attempts to enforce a “morality clause” in order to keep two woman in love apart is atrocious. Carolyn Compton, who is divorced and now lives with her partner of three years and two children, now has to ask her partner to move out or risk the loss of custody of her children. This morality clause is nothing more than another way to reinforce the discrimination of gay and lesbian Texans.
Furthermore, the enforcement of the morality clause will harm Compton’s children. Their father is potentially dangerous and a bad example, and they are used to living in a loving home with two mothers. If Compton’s partner is forced to move out, the children will effectively be losing a parent. I condemn you for your attempts to destroy a family simply so you can continue to practice bigoted and discriminatory law and ask that you choose to not enforce this so-called “morality clause”.
