Target: Illinois state legislators
Goal: Ban ammunition magazines that contain more than 10 rounds in Illinois.
The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School drew the need for increased gun control legislation into sharp focus when Adam Lanza opened fire on children and teachers, killing 27. Now, parents of those children killed in Newtown are calling on Illinois to ban the kind of high-capacity magazines that Lanza used in his act of murder. Join these parents and Governor Pat Quinn in insisting that high-capacity gun magazines be banned from Illinois.
Lanza fired a total of 154 bullets in under five minutes when he stormed Sandy Hook. This high rate of fire would not have been physically possible had Lanza not had access to the 30-round magazines he stole from his mother’s house. “If he needed to reload more often, how many other children might be alive today from both classrooms?” said Nicole Hockely, who lost her son in the shooting, at a recent news conference. “Maybe Dylan would still be alive.”
Shootings like Sandy Hook remain a possibility anywhere in the country so long as high-capacity weaponry remains available. By restricting the sale and delivery of gun magazines that contain more than 10 rounds of ammunition, Illinois has a chance to fight against the senseless violence that has claimed so many lives in recent memory. Don’t let the National Rifle Association bully Illinois legislators into keeping high-capacity gun magazines legal. Urge lawmakers to ban them immediately.
Dear Illinois state legislators,
Every day that high-capacity gun magazines remain legal in Illinois is a day that the lives of more children could be lost to senseless violence. Shooters like Adam Lanza use these magazines to fire rounds quickly on innocents, taking more lives than would be physically possible with smaller magazines. At Sandy Hook, Lanza fired 154 bullets in under five minutes. If that number were lower, some of the children lost in Newtown might still be alive today.
Parents of the Sandy Hook victims have come to you urging a ban on high-capacity gun magazines in Illinois. Such legislation must be passed around the country in order to keep our children safe. Set an example for the rest of America by banning gun magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
