Target: Gymboree, Walmart, Gap, Hallmark, and H&M
Goal: Remove toxic chemicals from products used by children
According to a recent survey of the Washington Toxics Coalition, several chain retail stores are selling children’s products that contain dangerous toxins. These toxic chemicals have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive problems. The study, called Chemicals Revealed, named thousands of children’s clothing, toys, car seats and personal care products that contained these harmful chemicals.
These toxic products line the shelves of stores like Walmart, the Gap, Hallmark, Gymboree, and H&M, to name a few. Some of the products include Hallmark party hats containing cancer-causing arsenic, Graco car seats containing a toxic flame retardant, and Walmart dolls that contain a hormone-disrupting chemical. Walmart alone reported 459 instances of products containing a variety of dangerous toxins. This retail giant actually fought against legislation that would forbid children’s products from containing toxic flame retardant, a common-sense legislation that failed to pass.
Unfortunately there are few restrictions and guidelines concerning what chemicals children’s products are allowed to contain. Manufacturers can put almost anything in children’s products. The report found 5,000 products that contained one or more of 41 chemicals that have been deemed harmful to children’s health, including toxic metals and chemicals. These retailers need to stop manufacturing products that are harmful to children’s health and well-being, and take products containing these toxins off of their shelves. They should show that they care about children’s health by protecting it, removing these products, and supporting legislation that would do the same.
Dear Gymboree, Walmart, Gap, Hallmark, and H&M,
A recent study carried out by the Washington Toxics Coalition has found more than 5,000 children’s products that contain one or more of 41 different toxins that have been deemed harmful to children’s health. These products, including clothing, toys, car seats, and personal care items, line your store shelves and should be removed immediately.
The toxic chemicals contained in these products have been linked to cancer, reproductive problems, and hormone disruption. To expose children to such chemicals is extremely dangerous. Please stop manufacturing children’s products that contain these harmful chemicals. Protect the health of children and families by producing safer products, and supporting common-sense legislation that would require other companies to do the same.
