Target: Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil
Goal: Halt the construction of large dams in the Amazon Rainforest to protect the rights of indigenous people and preserve the region’s precious habitats
Mega dams – enormous, advanced dam structures – threaten to destroy precious portions of the Amazon Rainforest. Indigenous people, river communities, fisherman, and environmental groups recently joined forces to protest the construction of one of the largest and most devastating dams proposed – the Belo Monte Dam. Protect the natural resources of the Amazon Rainforest and preserve the rights of indigenous people. Stop the construction of dams in the Amazon River.
The Belo Monte Dam would be the world’s third largest dam, built in the heart of the Amazon River. If completed, this dam would divert the flow of the entire Xingu River and devastate a huge region of the rainforest. Plenty of rainforest has already been destroyed in the region, and further dam building must be stopped.
This river diversion also threatens the survival of indigenous people – it would displace an estimated 40,000 local residents. In response to recent protests of the dams, the Brazilian government has sent in military and police groups to suppress the local residents. Residents have been forcibly removed from construction sites and prevented from voicing their opinions. This treatment of indigenous Amazonians violates human rights law and the Brazilian Constitution.
We must stop construction of these dams and save the Amazon from widespread environmental damage. Sign the below petition to show your support for indigenous Amazonian people and urge the Brazilian government to halt dam construction in the Amazon.[gravityform id=1 name=Signthe Petition: ajax=false]
Dear President Dilma Rousseff,
Mega dams, like the Belo Monte Dam, threaten to destroy precious segments of the Amazon Rainforest and displace tens of thousands of indigenous people. Please consider this dam’s effects upon the environment and how it would affect the people you were chosen to represent. Instead of suppressing the voices of the people most affected by the dam, please listen to their concerns and pay them due respect.
I am urging you to halt construction of the Belo Monte dam immediately. Enough damage has already been done to the Amazon Rainforest, so these efforts must be stopped. This huge dam, and others like it, will divert nearly the entire flow of the Xingu River, which will have devastating effects upon countless habitats and communities. We need your help to make Brazil a sustainable place to live, work, and grow.
