Applaud Former Football Star for Coming Out as Gay

Target: Kevin Grayson

Goal: Commend former athlete for publicly coming out as gay.

Former college football star and National Football League hopeful Kevin Grayson came out as gay in a recent interview. Grayson has been met with nothing but support after his announcement. Please sign this petition showing your support for not only Grayson, but for all gay athletes.

Kevin Grayson soared as a star wide receiver during college at the University of Richmond. In 2012, he went on to play professional football in Italy, being named the MVP of the Parma Panthers after helping them win the Italian Football League. Despite Grayson’s success at all levels — high school, college and professionally — the 25-year-old was always hiding a secret. Grayson recently revealed that he is gay in a television interview. Although Grayson’s decision to come out was hard, he says he has received support from his teammates and the public.

Grayson, who was previously married to a woman, says he didn’t come out earlier because he didn’t want to distract from the game, and the achievements and goals of this team. “You don’t want to be the focus in that way,” Grayson explained to CBS Virginia’s WTVR. “Not to say that it’s a negative, but when you have people just asking questions about your sexuality and how teammates are taking it, it takes away from the importance of the preseason. If you are an athlete, you want to be an athlete. You want to be known for to what you have done on the basketball court, football field, tennis court, whatever. You don’t want to be that person who is always ‘the gay athlete.’”

The recent emergence of “the gay athlete”, especially among men, will serve as inspiration for other athletes who are still in the closet. The masculine culture of sports can be inherently homophobic, insensitive or offensive. With more athletes coming out as their true selves, the culture will change and sports will become more accessible for children growing up gay.

Please sign this petition and applaud Kevin Grayson for coming out as a homosexual athlete.

Dear Mr. Grayson,

Your recent decision to come out as a gay football athlete was inspiring and brave. I am writing to applaud your courage and commend you on your new public life. Thank you for breaking stereotypes about gay people and serving as an inspiration for young people who may stay away from sports because of their sexual orientation.

At 25 years old, you have been a star on your high school, college and professional football teams. Your hard work, dedication and talent have propelled you into the spotlight and I’m glad to see you are using it to the benefit of others. Coming out is a long and hard decision that could also prove incredibly risky for an NFL hopeful. Despite the hurdles that you may now have the jump as a homosexual male athlete, it’s people like you that are changing the culture in sports.

Unfortunately, as you know thoughtless comments and name-calling accepted in sports, do not hit each athlete the same. As more gay athletes feel comfortable coming out, the culture will have to change to accommodate. Politically incorrect and outright offensive language that would not be acceptable anywhere else has become the norm for some coaches and among teammates. The stereotypes of masculinity surrounding athletes can clash with the feminine stereotypes surrounding gay men. You are dispelling these stereotypes by coming out and continuing to seek NFL success.

Thank you for having the courage to publicly come out and congratulations on being able to live your life authentically.
