Goal: Properly label foie gras as the product of a diseased animal, or discontinue it’s sale
Foie gras is a food product consisting of duck or goose liver that has been specially fattened by force-feeding. The traditional production of foie gras involves animal cruelty and has been banned in the state of California, and the city of Chicago, and multiple foreign countries. In February 2013, the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) filed a lawsuit against the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets for the sale of foie gras. Foie gras violates New York law by not being properly labeled as the product of a diseased animal. The ALDF is in the process of appealing this case.
During the production of foie gras, geese or ducks are force-fed an obscene amount of food before slaughter. Along with the consistent discomfort and pain of having an excessively full stomach, effects include scarring of the esophagus, impaired liver function, scratches on the throat and esophagus resulting in painful and/or fatal infections, and impaired mobility due to swollen abdomens. New York law prohibits the sale of adulterated or mislabeled food products. Aside from animal rights violations, failure to label foie gras as the product of a diseased animal, the welfare of consumers is being put at risk.
Please support the ALDF by petitioning the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets to properly label foie gras for what it really is discontinue its sale. Proper labeling would deter the sale of foie gras and educate the public about what it truly is. It would be ideal to ban the sale of foie gras altogether, but this is an important step in the right direction.
Dear NY Department of Agriculture and Markets,
I am writing to you regarding the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s current lawsuit against the department. I am asking you to reconsider your stance on the situation regarding foie gras. Please properly label foie gras as the product of a diseased animal or discontinue it’s sale in the state of New York.
During the production of foie gras, a goose or duck is force-fed an obscene amount of food before slaughter, enlarging it’s liver to roughly eight times it’s original size. If a human showed these symptoms, he or she would most definitely be considered as having a disease of the liver. It stands to reason that these animals should be considered diseased, and therefore, that foie gras is the production of a diseased animal.
Please reconsider your position on the labeling of foie gras, or discontinue it’s sale. The mislabeling of this product is a danger to the health and well-being of consumers.
