Target: National Democratic Institute Program Leader Lindsay Workman
Goal: Urge Jordan to reconsider its decision to reduce diplomatic relations with Israel.
Jordanian Parliament has unanimously voted to expel Israel’s Ambassador from Jordan, and to remove Jordanian Ambassadors from Israel. This is a step in the wrong direction – removing potential arbiters for diplomacy will only set the countries back in terms of peaceful negotiation. Jordanian sources claim that Israeli forces desecrated sites of worship, and Israel responded with claims that increased security was necessary around the Al-Aqsa Mosque. While sites of worship are constantly under political strife in the middle east, it is necessary to maintain civility between these two countries.
As Jordan and Israel share an incredibly long border, these two neighbor nations have had numerous territorial disputes over decades. Relations have come a long way, yet the removal of Jordanian Ambassadors from Israel, and the expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador from Jordan is a regressive step – removing these public figures may be interpreted by either countries’ population as an act of hostility. As tensions regarding restricted entry to the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem day rise, it is necessary to keep diplomatic relations available and accessible between these two nations.
The NDI – the National Democratic Institute – works hand in hand with civil organizations and students in Jordan, propagating democratic values and public involvement within parliamentary affairs. Signing this petition will urge the leader of the NDI’s program within Jordan to urge civil leaders, students, and other civil organizations to make their voices heard within their parliament, asking Jordanian parliament to keep the Israeli Ambassador in Jordan.
Dear Lindsay Workman, Senior Program Manager of NDI,
The expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador from Jordan can only hinder relations between these two countries, and it is necessary for the people of Jordan to speak to their parliament and let their voices be heard. Removing diplomatic units from foreign countries with already mounting tension can only further aggravate interactions between nations. As Jordan believes Israel has desecrated holy ground during Jerusalem day, and Israel responded stating these were defensive measures, tensions between two countries are becoming more and more frightening.
As the National Democratic Institute has worked closely with Jordanian officials and political groups, I feel that your program’s direct intervention could prevent further conflict from arising. With the NDI’s direct participation in urging the people of Jordan to address their parliament in hopes of furthering peace through diplomatic means, not only would the Jordanian parliament recognize the involvement of their population within their government, but they could avert a potential increase in hostility.
Due to recent tensions involving the withdrawal of Jordanian Ambassadors from Israel and the expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador from Jordan after Jerusalem Day, I urge you to shift the NDI’s focus to implore the Jordanian civil organizations with which you work so closely to use their voices within their community to sway their parliament’s decision in expelling the Israeli Ambassador, and to keep their Ambassadors active in Israel.
