Commend California for Providing Transgender Student Accommodations

Target: Tom Ammiano, California Assemblyman

Goal: Thank California assembly for signing a bill that promotes transgender equality

The California assembly recently approved a bill that will provide proper accommodations for transgender students. The bill gives students the right to participate on sports teams and use public restrooms that correspond with their identified gender. Applaud California for passing this highly important equality bill.

Though California already has an anti-discrimination bill that prohibits schools from discriminating against students based on their gender identity, the newest bill takes things a step further. Transgender students often face issues and complications when gender-segregated situations arise. The most notable among these are the use of restrooms, locker rooms, and participation on sports teams. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D) explains that the new bill will give transgender students the safety and security they need at school.

As students are coming out as transgender at younger and younger ages, it is essential that they are given the same protection, rights, and feeling of safety and acceptance as other students. The National Center for Transgender Equality explains the goal that this type of policy hopes to achieve: “reducing the stigmatization of and improving the educational integration of transgender and gender nonconforming students, maintaining the privacy of all students, and fostering cultural competence and professional development for school staff.” An atmosphere of cultural competence means allowing students to properly express their gender identities, meaning that a boy who identifies as such should be allowed to play on the male sports team, regardless of the anatomy they were born with.

If students see that the administration, teachers, and coaches are all in support of the freedom to express gender identity, they are far more likely to follow suite. The bill will affect positive change all around. Thank California for taking a huge step towards transgender equality.

Dear Assemblyman Ammiano,

The bill that the California assembly just passed regarding transgender equality in schools is essential. Students who are transgender will feel much more comfortable at school, as they can use the proper restroom and locker room and participate with their identified gender if they choose to play sports.

Discrimination in schools is a rampant problem, regardless of what students’ identities are. The school setting can be especially difficult and confusing for transgender students, as activities are often gender-segregated. By allowing transgender students to participate in activities with the gender that they identify as, the assembly has created a safe and secure environment for these students. I applaud you for taking another important step towards transgender equality.
