Target: The Lake Elmo City Mayor Pearson and Council members
Goal: Retain no-wake zones until noon on the remaining three lakes in the cities of Lake Elmo, Lake Olson, and Lake DeMontreville
In the sleepy little bedroom community of Lake Elmo, Minnesota, a small group of water skiers are causing an uproar by trying to undo decades of regulations on four lakes in the area. They were successful in introducing and passing a bill on one lake, Lake Jane, to reduce the no-wake zone back to 9:00am daily, allowing them to ski in the morning hours. Not content with skiing on one of the lakes, they are now trying to impose the same hours on the remaining three. Early morning skiing and loud lake activity would not only disrupt residents of the area, but also disturb wildlife, such as ducks, geese, muskrats, and turtles, that frequently skim the lake water at these hours. Urge the council members to keep a no-wake zone on these lakes to preserve the well being of local swimming residents and native wildlife.
Recently, the council heard the opinions of 67 people at their last meeting with an overwhelming amount (61 residents) speaking out against a change in regulation. Those against the change cherish the no-wake hours to fish, swim, canoe, sail, kayak, train their dogs, and simply enjoy the peacefulness and quiet of nature in the morning without the elevated noise level of speedboats, jet skis, and other added traffic to these already small lakes. Eliminating no-wake zone hours would also inconvenience visitors of a local Jesuit retreat house that borders Lake DeMontreville, where many vacation for quiet and relaxation.
The irony that seems to be lost on these water skiers is the fact that more jet skis, pontoons, and boats pulling wake boarders and tubers on the lakes will only make it more difficult for waters skiers to ski. Fishing boats, too, can now traverse the small bays and inlets at full speed, causing disruption for all lake goers. Sign this petition urging these five council members not to coddle this small interest group at the expense of the rest of the community that enjoys these lovely small lakes in the morning hours.
Dear City of Lake Elmo Mayor Pearson and Council Members Bloyer, Morrow, Park and Smith,
In lieu of the recent proposition to eliminate the no-wake hours on Lake Elmo, Lake Olson, and Lake DeMontreville in Minnesota, I encourage you to vote no. Please stand with the local residents of these lakes who enjoy the peace and quiet of the no-wake zones in the early morning, and do not give in to a small minority group with a single focus. Water skiers are free to ski on Lake Jane, a neighboring body of water, and have no reason to infringe on the morning peace of these other lakes.
In addition to the many who enjoy a calm lake in the morning, please consider the fact that allowing noise on the lake at all times severely encroaches on wildlife by disturbing them at all hours of the day. These lakes are full of fish, muskrats, ducks, geese, and turtles, as well as their young, that benefit from a calm lake in the daytime. During the early parts of the day, these animals are active and allowed to share the lake without the risk of speedboat collisions and heavy waves. I urge you to keep the no-wake hours on the three remaining city lakes at noon each day.
