Remove Toxic Chemicals From Children’s Products

Target: Mike Duke, Walmart CEO

Goal: Remove toxic substances from Walmart’s children products

A recent study has come out by watchdog group the Washington Toxics Coalition that identified over 5000 children’s products that include toxins and carcinogens that adversely affect children’s developmental or reproductive development. Thousands of name brand children’s products contain toxic chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive problems. The study identified a number of major manufacturers who reported using the chemicals in their products including Walmart. Companies like Walmart need to show they’re serious about children’s health by getting toxic chemicals out of their products and supporting common-sense legislation.

Products reported so far include children’s clothing and footwear, personal care products, baby products, toys, car seats, and arts and craft supplies. Some examples include Hallmark party hats containing cancer-causing arsenic, Graco car seats containing the toxic flame retardant TBBPA (tetrabromobisphenol A) and Walmart dolls containing hormone-disrupting bisphenol A. These products contain toxic metals such as mercury, cadmium, cobalt, antimony, and molybdenum. Manufacturers reported using phthalates in clothing, toys, bedding, and baby products.

Walmart alone reported a total of 459 instances of products containing chemicals including arsenic, cadmium, phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), and mercury. The retail giant has fought hard against consumer protection legislation. Most recently, the company led a coalition against the Toxic-Free Kids and Families Act (HB 1294) in Washington state, which would have required manufacturers to stop using toxic flame retardants. Tell Walmart to stop putting its customers at risk, particularly small children. This petition demands that Walmart remove toxic substances form children’s products.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mike Duke,

A recent study has recently come out by watchdog group the Washington Toxics Coalition that identified over 5000 children’s products that include toxins and carcinogens that are being marketing by large retailers.  Walmart alone reported a total of 459 instances of products containing chemicals including arsenic, cadmium, phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), and mercury. Your company has fought against consumer protection legislation, most recently, when you led a coalition against the Toxic-Free Kids and Families Act (HB 1294) in Washington state.

Thousands of name brand children’s products, including children’s clothing and footwear, personal care products, baby products, toys, car seats, and arts and craft supplies,  contain toxic chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and reproductive problems. Walmart must stop putting its customers at risk, particularly the health of small children. This petition demands that Walmart remove toxic substances from children’s products.

Sincerely,

  1. J Davidson says:

Leave it to Walmart for more violations.

  2. Aaron Johnson says:

Toxic chemicals should be removed from all children’s products.

  3. George Pinnell says:

It is bad enough that fluoride is added to toothpastes – hence why they carry the poison warning, but at least knowledgeable consumers can choose a fluoride free alternative. Whereas, in the water it violates the individual’s consent, and it may even be imposed without notification or against public wishes. Don’t the legislators know that sodium fluoride has been used as an effective rat poison? Or are they so in the pocket of big business that they fail to take action even when over 30% OF CHILDREN IN FLUORIDATED AREAS ARE SUFFERING FROM DENTAL FLUOROSIS?
