Target: Robert Mueller, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation
Goal: Demand the FBI remove activist Assata Shakur from Most Wanted Terrorist List.
The FBI recently added former Black Panther, Assata Shakur, to its Most Wanted Terrorist List. Assata Shakur is the first woman to make the list, and the second domestic “terrorist” to be added to the list. Shakur was convicted of killing a New Jersey police officer in 1973 during a shoot-out that left one of her fellow activists dead. She escaped jail in 1979, and fled to Cuba for political asylum.
In her own words, Shakur defended her actions, stating, “Because of government persecution, I was left with no other choice than to flee from the political repression, racism and violence that dominate the U.S. government’s policy towards people of color.” Indeed, evidence and official testimony all support Assata Shakur’s innocence in the shooting incident, in which she sustained two bullet wounds. Official fingerprint analysis, submitted as evidence, lacked even one of Shakur’s prints. There was no gunpowder residue on Shakur’s hand when she was removed to the hospital, immediately following the shooting. Her own injuries suggest that Shakur’s hands were raised when she was shot. Additionally, trial transcripts of a witness, a New Jersey State Trooper, reveal the Trooper admitting to having lied in his reports and testimonies.
Whether or not Shakur is innocent may, perhaps, be a question for another jury. Either way, Assata Shakur should not be categorized as one of America’s Most Wanted Terrorists. Racism and prejudice have tainted the case since the beginning. None of Shakur’s actions warrant such an extreme level of action against her. The reward for her capture is currently totaled at $2 million, an enormous amount that seems to akin to blood money intended to ensure Shakur’s capture, dead or alive. Sign the petition below to express your anger, and to demand that Shakur be removed from the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list immediately.
Dear Director Mueller,
Recently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation added former Black Panther Assata Shakur to their Most Wanted Terrorist list. Shakur is the first woman and the second domestic terrorist to make that list. A bounty of $2 million currently rests on Shakur’s head, for her recapture. Shakur was convicted of killing a New Jersey police officer in 1973, and escaped prison to Cuba in 1979.
Evidence suggests that Assata Shakur is not only not a terrorist, but she is also innocent of the crime she was convicted of committing. Whether or not Shakur is truly innocent, she does not deserve to be on the Most Wanted Terrorist list. Not a single one of her actions can be categorized as “terrorism.” I am writing today to demand that Ms. Shakur be removed from the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list imemdaitely.
