Target: Abbott Laboratories shareholders
Goal: Remove genetically modified ingredients from Similac baby formula products
For years, Abbott Laboratories, a major nutritional products company, has been selling Similac baby formula products laced with Genetically Modified (GM) ingredients. Modified corn, soy, and other byproducts known to pose potential health risks are used. Babies are at a vulnerable stage of development, and should not be consuming Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). The shareholders of Abbott are considering removing GMOs from Similac baby formula. As an industry leader in the baby formula market, Abbott’s potential decision to remove GMOs from its products could set an important new precedent for the industry. Tell Abbott to eliminate GMOs from the company’s products and set this important precedent.
GMOs are prohibited in organic infant formula, but widely used in conventional formula. Many of the ingredients used in conventional infant formula are derived from crops that have been genetically altered to resist herbicides, so that weed killers that would normally kill or injure the plant can be sprayed more frequently. Many studies, including the recent 2012 Gilles-Eric Seralini study, show that GM products and the chemicals commonly applied to them are dangerous and caused cancerous tumors to develop in more than 70 percent of laboratory rats fed a steady diet of it. Regardless, GMOs continue to be used in American food products, including in baby formulas produced by Abbott under its Similac brand. This puts the long-term health of millions of babies at risk.
Foods that have been genetically engineered by Monsanto and other chemical manufacturers have never been adequately tested for long-term human health or environmental safety. Babies are not an acceptable group for experimenting on. Given that some scientific studies point to serious harm from consuming GMOs, all baby formula should be free from GMOs until they can be irrefutably proven to be safe.
Dear Abbott Laboratories shareholders,
Given the safety concerns raised in several scientific studies as well as an insufficient data from long-term studies using laboratory animals or humans, it is irresponsible for infant formula manufacturers to experiment with the health of babies by sourcing Genetically Modified ingredients for infant formula. Babies are at a vulnerable stage of development, and are not an acceptable group for experimenting on. All baby formula should be free from GMOs until they can be irrefutably proven to be safe.
Because Abbott Laboratories is an industry leader in the baby formula market, the potential decision to remove Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) from your products could set a new precedent for the entire industry to follow. Until your company sets this precedent and stops using GMOs, hundreds of thousands of infants will be unwitting participants in a dangerous, uncontrolled experiment that threatens the health of the next generation.
