Target: John Harris, Executive Director of the Tennessee Firearms Association
Goal: Condemn Tennessee gun group for raffling off the same model of assault rifle used by the Newtown shooter.
A Tennessee-based gun group, known as the Tennessee Firearms Association, has announced plans to raffle off a Bushmaster AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, the assault rifle model used by Newtown school shooter Adam Lanza. The Tennessee Firearms Association (TFA) stated that the raffle would be an attempt “to advance the effort to resist Barack Obama, the federal government and even a few in Tennessee state government who are determined to destroy your 2nd Amendment rights!!”
The promotion began in response to the US Senate’s consideration of gun violence prevention legislation. The TFA demanded members “act with force and determination to protect, preserve and restore” gun rights. The promotion does not require individuals to be a part of the TFA to enter the raffle, but are using the raffle as a fundraising event and calling for whatever donations the public is willing to give. The TFA states that it has drawn more than 10,000 entries for the raffle.
Raffling off the assault rifle model used by Adam Lanza is not a statement for gun rights. It is an insensitive, callous declaration that heartlessly belittles the Newtown tragedy. A number of adults and children lost their lives to Adam Lanza; whatever an individual’s opinions on gun rights and gun control, there is no excuse to disrespect and disregard the impact of the tragedy. Sign the petition below to condemn the TFA for raffling off this assault rifle.
Dear John Harris,
Recently, the Tennessee Firearms Association announced its plans to raffle off an Bushmaster AR-15 semiautomatic rifle. The Bushmaster AR-15 is the assault rifle model used by the Newtown school shooter, Adam Lanza. Although you and your organization are completely within your rights to protest gun legislation, there is no excuse for this type of statement. By raffling off the type of gun used to murder so many innocent children, the TFA belittles and disrespects the tragic Newtown shooting. It is a flippant response to a serious issue, and an incident that continues to affect many people in Newtown and out.
I am writing to condemn your raffle of this weapon, and to condemn your attempt to use the raffle as a fundraising event for your organization. There is no excuse to disrespect and diminish the Newtown tragedy so blatantly.
