Preserve Beautiful Desert Mountain Range as a National Monument

Target: Barack Obama, President of the United States

Goal: Protect and preserve desert ecosystems of southern New Mexico by creating the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument

Just outside Las Cruces, New Mexico, the Organ Mountains set a beautiful landscape and harbor unique animal and plant species. This mountain range also boosts the local economy with tourism and helps to educate visitors about southern New Mexico’s rich history. However, development in the region threatens to destroy this fragile and vulnerable natural resource. Preserve the Organ Mountains by creating the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument.

The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance (NMWA) has been working to make the Organ Mountains, Sierra de Las Uvas Mountains, Potrillo Volcanic Field and West Potrillo Mountains, East Potrillo Mountains, Robledo Mountains, and the Doña Ana Mountains part of a new Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. If approved, this new monument will protect and preserve more than 500,000 acres of unique desert ecosystems, historic trails, and archeological sites. Otherwise, the historic Butterfield Stagecoach Trail, Geronimo’s Cave, and Apollo Mission astronaut training sites will deteriorate without protection.

In a recent NMWA survey, eighty-three percent of local citizens support the creation of the national monument. These mountainous regions provide wildlife habitats, human recreation, breathtaking scenery, and cultural resources. Sign the below petition to urge President Obama to push through legislation that will make the Organ Mountains a national monument.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama,

The Organ Mountains region in southern New Mexico harbors a great deal of diverse species, national history, and economic promise. Over-development in the area will destroy this beautiful and essential landscape unless you take action now to protect it. Fragile petroglyphs in these mountains date back to more than 10,000 years of human occupation, and many local sites are sacred to native groups.

An overwhelming majority of local citizens and neighboring businesses have shown their support for the creation of a new Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument. The monument holds significant long-term economic benefits as well for the region. For example, tourists to the neighboring White Sands National Monument spent $15.7 million in the local economy in a single year.

I am urging you to support and push through legislation that plans for the creation of this national monument. We need your help to secure our nation’s national treasures for future generations.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
