Praise New York Senate for Passing Shark Fin Ban

NY shark fin ban

Target: New York Senate

Goal: Applaud New York Senators for unanimously passing a bill to ban shark fin trade.

The New York Senate passed a bill to end the destructive trade of shark fins in the state. The proposed bill prohibits the possession, sale, and trade of shark fins in New York. Currently, six other states and all three Pacific U.S. territories have implemented a ban on shark fins in order to protect sharks and preserve the world’s ocean ecosystems. Commend the New York Senate for passing this bill and setting an example for the New York State Assembly and governor, who is expected to pass the bill as well.

It is estimated that 73 million sharks die from the cruel shark fin trade each year. These sharks are captured live and have their fins cut off. The sharks are then dumped back into the ocean and unable to swim; thus, sinking to the bottom and drowning. Shark fins are used as the main ingredient in the Chinese delicacy shark fin soup. Often the most expensive item on menus, shark fin soup is the main driver of the multi-billion dollar international shark fin trade. Shark fin soup has no nutritional value and is mainly served as a symbol of status.

Since California banned the sale, purchase, and distribution of shark fins, New York has become the leading hub of trade for shark fins in the United States. However, shark populations are rapidly declining, as they are already vulnerable due to climate change. The loss of sharks will upset the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems. The New York Senate has acknowledged the peril of sharks and is becoming a leader in extending protection to these misunderstood creatures. The shark fin trade is unnecessarily cruel and detrimental to the environment.

Applaud the New York Senate for passing the bill and bringing the state one step closer to banning the shark fin trade.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear New York Senators,

I would like to commend you for unanimously approving a ban on the shark fin trade. The proposed bill prohibits the possession, sale, and trade of shark fins in New York. New York is currently the leading hub of trade for shark fins in the United States and it is reassuring to know that the state is working toward eliminating this cruel practice.

As you may know, approximately 73 million sharks die each year from the shark fin trade. These sharks are captured live and have their fins cut off. The sharks are then dumped back into the ocean and unable to swim, thus, sinking to the bottom and drowning. Shark fins are used as the main ingredient in the expensive Chinese delicacy shark fin soup. This soup has no nutritional value and is served simply as a symbol of status. Sharks should not have to suffer for this needless purpose.

Sharks are important to the ocean ecosystem, and many species are already in decline due to climate change. Thank you for passing the bill and bringing New York one step closer to banning the shark fin trade.

Sincerely,
