Commend Micronesia and Morocco for Cutting Down on Greenhouse Gases

Target: Emanuel Mori, President of the Federated States of Micronesia; and Abdelillah Benkirane, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Morocco

Goal: Applaud Micronesia and Morocco for submitting a proposal to cut down on emissions of super-greenhouse gases

Rapid climate change and rising sea levels present an increasing global concern. Often, it seems issues of widespread pollution are ignored in favor of political agendas. However, recent proposals from several nations demonstrate a commitment to cutting down on deadly emissions and making real change toward a sustainable future. Commend the Federated States of Micronesia and the Kingdom of Morocco for pledging to cut back on hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs: gases hundreds of thousands of times more deadly to the earth than carbon dioxide.

The use of HFCs has only been increasing around the world. In fact, these chemicals are the fastest growing greenhouse gases in the United States. If their production is not curbed, their use will increase tenfold by 2050. Emitting HFCs into the atmosphere unchecked will cause sea levels to rise more quickly and influence weather patterns to create more deadly storms like Hurricane Sandy.

Micronesia and Morocco are two of the latest nations to express their eagerness to combat climate change. “The countries of the world have been clamoring for immediate action on climate change, rightly insisting that mitigation ambition must be increased before 2020,” said Abderrahim Chakour, Division Chief of the Ministry of Business and New Technologies of Morocco. “Addressing HFCs is an essential component of this urgently needed international action.”

“The damage from rising seas and higher storm surges is one of the most visible and costly effects of climate change,” agreed Ambassador Asterio Takesy of the Federated States of Micronesia. “Reducing HFCs is critical for slowing both temperature increase and sea-level rise.”

Sign the petition below to commend both Micronesia and Morocco for pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Dear President Emanuel Mori and Prime Minister Abdelillah Benkirane,

Recently, your nations became the latest to join the global campaign against climate change. As you know, rising sea levels and spiking global temperatures present an unprecedented concern. Without leadership like yours against the looming danger of global warming, climate change will only cause more havoc around the world.

All too often, world leaders procrastinate on climate change policy or insist that it is not a pressing global issue. By taking a stand for progressive climate policy, you are helping to show the rest of the world that action is needed now. Thank you for your commitment to the environment and for pledging to phase down the emissions of hydrofluorocarbons.
