Support Activists’ Efforts to Derail Risky Oil Pipeline

Nebraska

Target: Dave Heineman, Governor of Alaska

Goal: Support Nebraska activists in dismantling plans for an enormous oil pipeline

Nebraskans are currently rallying and preparing to attend a public hearing with the US State Department over proposals for an enormous oil pipeline.  The project is called the Keystone XL pipeline, and an upcoming recommendation to President Obama on whether to approve the project will be  influenced by the outcome of public hearings like the one in Alaska.

After the horrendous tar sand oil spill in Arkansas, the proposed construction of the pipeline has rallied the otherwise polite and cautious Nebraskans into a coalition of  activists. The so-called “Bold Nebraska” activists have claimed solidarity with Arkansans and ask that the Nebraska Governor require TransCanada to completely avoid Sandhills and the Aquifer.

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman approved the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline that would traverse his state in January. This was a significant step towards reviving the project, after President Obama sidelined the initiative last year. The Republican governor approved a revised route for the Canada-to-Texas pipeline, which his office said would avoid environmentally sensitive areas. However, the proposed Keystone XL pipeline route still crosses the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the country’s largest sources of freshwater providing irrigation and drinking water to millions of Americans. The pipeline also crosses the fragile Sandhills, which provide water to Nebraskan families, farms and ranches.

Traditionally conservative Nebraska citizens have taken a stance against the pipeline and demand that the Governor require TransCanada to completely avoid Sandhills and the Aquifer and President Obama reject the pipeline project. Nebraska activists’ efforts to protect their families and environment should be supported.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Heineman,

After the horrendous tar sand oil spill in Arkansas, the proposed construction of the Keystone XL pipeline has rallied the otherwise polite and cautious citizens of Nebraska into a coalition of newly minted activists. The so-called “Bold Nebraska” activists have claimed solidarity with Arkansas and ask that President Obama reject the proposed pipeline project.

You approved the revised route for the Canada-to-Texas pipeline, which your office said would avoid environmentally sensitive areas. However, the proposed pipeline route still crosses the Ogallala Aquifer, one of the country’s largest sources of freshwater. The pipeline also crosses the fragile Sandhills, which provides water to Nebraskan families, farms and ranches. The traditionally conservative Nebraska citizens have taken a stance against the pipeline and ask that you require TransCanada to completely avoid Sandhills and the Aquifer.  As the Governor, you represent the interests of the citizens of Nebraska. This petition asks that you support Bold Nebraska’s efforts and take a stance against the Keystone pipeline.

Sincerely,
