End Brutal Treatment of Pigs in South African Pork Industry

Target: Minister of the Department of Agriculture, Andrew Bartlett

Goal: End the cruelty and animal rights violations pervading the South African pork industry

Many pigs are raised and slaughtered for human consumption worldwide, but in South Africa these animals face particularly harsh treatment. The pigs are raised in a highly structured system, where every aspect of their lives is closely monitored and they have no freedom. They are not able to freely move about, nor are they able to interact with other pigs. Demand a change to the cruel treatment of pigs in South Africa.

There are many horrors in the South African pork industry, but the most disturbing aspect is the sow crate. A sow crate is an incredibly narrow rectangular box that a pregnant sow is comfined in for most of her gestation period. She cannot turn around, and transitioning from a standing position to lying down is extremely difficult. These crates must be banned forever.

All animals deserve to be treated humanely, even if they are being raised for consumption. They deserve to have comfortable lives free from pain and distress, and that is only possible if the cruel practices in the pork industry system are ended. Sow crates are internationally recognized for their cruelty, and the harsh way the pigs are contained every day of their lives is unhealthy and disturbing. The global community must stand together and demand that South Africa bans sow crates and improves conditions for all pigs being raised as livestock.

Dear Minister Bartlett,

The cruel practices being used in the South African pork industry today need to end. Animals deserve to be raised comfortably and humanely, and in order for this to be possible in South Africa, changes must be made. Many countries are working to improve the way they raise and slaughter livestock, and it is time South Africa joined this movement.

The biggest change that must be made in South Africa regards the sow crate. These cruel mechanisms are incredibly inhumane, and cause psychological distress for the animal locked inside. The pork industry will never be free from brutality until the sow crate is banned forever. In addition, all pigs need more space to be able to move freely and interact with the other animals. These animals all deserve better lives, and South Africa can easily provide them with increased comforts, and decreased pain.

  1. humane treatment of the pigs.

  2. I would dearly love to trap the ‘farmers’ into these crates and leave them there for a few years – their views would change I am sure. Just because we are human does not mean we have the right to treat animals in this cruel manner just to satisfy our own needs/greed. I would rather starve that condone this treatment. But then these people have very little regard for human life either – that has clearly been shown over the years

  3. The pain of living with the carelessness of human arrogance
