Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Applaud Obama for creating a plan to keep the slaughter of horses illegal in the United States.
As part of his recent budget proposal, President Obama made provisions for American horses. Buried in the 224-page document, there is a section of the proposal requesting Congress to forbid the slaughter of horses by factory farms for the production of meat in the U.S. Starting in 2014, the proposal aims to remove funding for inspections of plants that slaughter horses, effectively stopping the industry before it starts. The companies in western states planning to start producing horse meat will be unable to do so without the approval of government inspectors.
The budget proposal has been strongly supported by numerous animal rights’ organizations, including the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). ASPCA senior vice-president Nancy Perry commented on the proposal, saying, “It is wonderful to see our government taking steps to ensure American horses are not slaughtered on our own soil for foreign demand…Wasting tax dollars on cruel and dangerous practices makes no sense, and we urge Congress to adopt this budget cut.”
Join Perry and other animal rights’ organizations in supporting this budget proposal, and thank President Obama for protecting horses in the United States.
Dear President Obama,
Thank you for including the protection of American horses in your recent budget proposal. The slaughter of horses for meat is a cruel and inhumane practice that needs to be prevented. It is commendable that you remembered in your proposal the horses whose lives are at risk in factory farms. Several companies are hoping to receive approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to begin producing horse meat soon, and removing funding for government inspections to take place at these slaughter houses will also remove the possibility of this industry taking hold.
Please accept my full support of this proposal. Push this plan through to protect horses, and to uphold our country’s compassion and respect for this beautiful, intelligent animal.
