Praise New Zealand Lawmakers for Approving Gay Marriage

Target: Members of New Zealand Parliament

Goal: Praise Parliament members for voting in favor of a gay marriage bill

Celebration rang in the New Zealand parliament on Wednesday when a vote of 77 to 44 secured the passage of a bill legalizing same sex marriage. The bill’s passing marks New Zealand as the 13th country in the world, as well as the first country in the Asia-Pacific region, to legalize gay marriage.

The bill’s sponsor, Parliament member Louisa Wall, gave a rousing speech following the bill’s passing: “In our society, the meaning of marriage is universal — it’s a declaration of love and commitment to a special person. Nothing could make me more proud to be a New Zealander than passing this bill.” She ended her speech by declaring that the changes introduced in the bill are “our road towards healing.”

New Zealand has allowed civil unions between same sex couples since 2005 but the new laws introduced by the bill will now allow these couples to jointly adopt children and have their married status recognized in other countries. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key offered his own words of wisdom following the bill’s passing: “In my view, marriage is a very personal thing between two individuals. And, in the end, this is part of equality in modern-day New Zealand.”

Help praise the New Zealand lawmakers who helped pass this new bill by signing this petition letter.

Dear New Zealand Lawmakers,

Thank you so much for passing the new bill legalizing gay marriage in your country. In so doing, you’ve brought a major positive change not only to your nation but to the world at large. Hopefully other countries will be quick to lead by your example. Equality for all has been a long and exhausting battle but the major victory you and your country have won is sure to get many other people in many other countries to stand up and notice.

I both implore and encourage you to continue fighting for the rights of all people, gay or straight, both in your own country and abroad. Equal rights for all regardless of their sexual orientation should be so much more than a pipe dream. Thanks to your efforts, they might not have to be for much longer. By signing this petition letter, I am offering my personal praise and support for all the good you’ve done and will continue to do.
