Target: Italian Directorate General for Animal Health and Veterinary Drugs Gaetana Ferri
Goal: Stop the slaughter of lambs for Easter in Italy
Each year, over 4 million lambs, sheep, and goats are inhumanely slaughtered in Italy for Easter. Many of these animals are shipped to Italy via Eastern Europe. They are crammed into tiny trucks, unable to eat, drink, or move during the voyage. Then they are tortured in slaughterhouses until they’re killed for meat. Eating lamb is an Easter tradition in Italy, but the brutality is unbelievable. all on the Italian Directorate General for Animal Health and Veterinary Drugs to end this cruel practice.
An investigation by Animal Equality conducted in Italian slaughterhouses found a decomposing lamb left outside a pen for days. Farm workers grabbed sheep by their necks and threw them around. Animals were piled up on top of each other in slaughterhouse pens, held in by metal gratings. The animals screamed and rubbed themselves bloody against the metal gratings while waiting to be killed. They were not stunned before they were killed, so they were conscious as they bled to death.
Animal Equality calls for the Italian people not to eat lamb on Easter to protest these horrific slaughters. We are calling for more attention to slaughterhouse practices. Urge Italian Directorate General for Animal Health and Veterinary Drugs Gaetana Ferri to monitor and outlaw inhumane slaughtering practices in Italy.
Dear Dr. Ferri,
Eating lamb for Easter is a time-honored tradition in Italy. However, animal rights activists are greatly concerned about the way these lambs are treated. 4 million sheep, lambs, and goats are consumed for Easter festivities in Italy. Many are shipped from Eastern Europe in tiny crates that they can barely stand in. It gets worse after that.
An investigation by animal rights organization Animal Equality found farm workers grabbing these gentle animals by the necks and throwing them around, piling them on top of each other in pens with metal grating, killing them while they were conscious, and leaving their carcasses around for days.
Goats are intelligent, curious animals that can be trained to work as dogs do. Sheep are gentle animals that can distinguish human and animal faces and recognize them for sometimes years. We urge you to monitor and outlaw these barbaric slaughtering practices.
