Demand an End to Animal Testing at Imperial College London

Target: Secretary of State for the Home Department, Theresa May

Goal: Revoke the Imperial College London’s Establishment License to stop harmful animal research

Despite the United Kingdom’s ban on animal testing, an undercover investigation revealed that dozens of atrocities were being committed behind the doors of one of the UK’s most prestigious universities. Imperial College London has apparently been conducting research using live animal subjects and abusing them in chilling ways. Now, activist groups are calling for the revocation of Imperial College’s Establishment License, which would prevent them from doing more animal research.

The animals used in experiments had their organs and other body parts surgically mutilated and had tubes implanted into their brains. Others were force fed substances through tubes stuck down their throats, and others had substances injected into their stomachs. The investigation revealed countless animals suffering from “bleeding head of abdomen wounds, diarrhea, lethargy…hypothermia,” and reported that dozens of animals died in or directly after the experimental procedures. Some who survived had to be killed shortly afterward in order to be put out of their intense pain.

All of the animals faced extreme pain and psychological distress, and the scientists and technicians in charge of the testing are also being criticized for their lack of expertise and the neglect that it entailed. They did not provide animals with enough tranquilizers, anesthetics, or pain relief medicine and killed the animals in an unprofessional manner. Demand that the Home Secretary of the UK revoke Imperial College’s Establishment License so that these atrocities will never happen again.

Dear Secretary May,

The recently uncovered animal testing that has been occurring at the Imperial College London is appalling. Imperial College is internationally renowned as a place of learning, and this disturbing discovery is a blemish on its reputation. The United Kingdom has been proving itself to be a leader in the drive for animal rights, and already laws and regulations are in place to protect animals from commercial research. In light of this recent finding, it is time that Imperial College London lost its Establishment License.

The college has proven itself unworthy of such a license. The cruel testing inflicted upon animals, and the careless ways they were purposely killed, shows that the college should not hold an Establishment License. They have clearly abused their privilege and lack the knowledge, expertise, and empathy needed for such experiments.

Such acts of barbarism cannot be repeated. By revoking Imperial College London’s Establishment License, the United Kingdom will have eliminated one more threat to the world’s animals. The college has proven itself to be irresponsible and careless, and countless lives have been lost in the process. Revoke Imperial College’s license, and ensure that animals are not forced to suffer for science ever again.
