Support Higher Standards for Reducing Tailpipe Emissions

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Finalize proposed guidelines to increase fuel efficiency and create cleaner emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recently proposed new emissions standards in the United States. These regulations, outlined in the EPA’s proposed Tier 3 Program, would demand cleaner tailpipe emissions and work to lower the sulfur content of gasoline from 30 parts per million to 10 by the year 2017. Furthermore, these new standards would allow car manufacturers to install more efficient mechanisms to control tailpipe emissions.

According to senior vice president of the American Lung Association Paul G. Billings, carrying out the EPA’s proposed plan would be the equivalent of removing 33 million cars from American roads. This would drastically reduce the number of pollution-related illnesses – like asthma – plaguing our country. Billings also states that by reducing such a large portion of pollution, the new EPA emissions standards could prevent nearly 2,500 premature deaths and 23,000 cases of respiratory disease in children in the United States.

Cleaning up tailpipe emissions and lowering sulfur levels in gasoline would bring the United States’ standards up to those of the European Union and Japan. Many car manufacturers have shown support for the new Tier 3 guidelines, despite a probable increase in the cost of production.

The American Petroleum Institute – the oil and natural gas industry’s biggest trade organization – claims that the proposed standards are expensive and inefficient, yet careful study has revealed that the actual price increase would likely be as little as one cent per gallon of gasoline. This amount would translate to an extra 130 dollars per car over the course of its lifespan. Furthermore, the health benefits, especially as they relate to children, far outweigh concerns over these minor costs.

Help ensure longer, healthier lives for Americans across the nation. Sign this petition and support the EPA’s new Tier 3 standards for cleaner tailpipe emissions and reduced sulfur levels in gasoline.

Dear President Obama,

One of humans’ most harmful impacts on the environment is pollution caused by vehicle emissions. These dirty emissions lead to overwhelming levels of pollutants in the atmosphere, including sulfur, and cause thousands of respiratory illnesses each year.

The new emissions regulations proposed in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 3 would drastically reduce the amount of pollution caused by vehicles, amounting to a decrease in pollution equivalent to removing 33 million cars off the road. Studies have shown that this could reduce the number of deaths caused by emissions-related respiratory illnesses by almost 2,500. Furthermore, it would lead to longer, healthier lives and an increased standard of living for the vast majority of Americans at a relatively low cost.

In respect to the many benefits of the EPA’s proposed Tier 3 standards for tailpipe emissions, I strongly urge you to finalize this plan and have it take effect as planned by the year 2017. In this way, you will help ensure cleaner emissions and longer, happier lives for all Americans.
