Target: Robert Barchi, President of Rutgers University
Goal: Condemn President Barchi for failing to protect Rutgers basketball players after he was made aware of abuses, and demand he resign.
Rutgers basketball Head Coach Mike Rice was fired after videotapes of him abusing Rutgers players were released. The abuse depicted included the use of derogatory anti-gay slurs, cursing, grabbing, kicking players and throwing balls forcefully at their heads when they weren’t looking. President Barchi was aware of the abuse and had seen the video, but failed to fire Rice or take any action to protect the players until the video was released to the public. Condemn Barchi for his failure to act and demand he resign.
In addition to Rice, Athletic Director Tim Pernetti and Assistant Coach Jummy Martelli have been forced to resign. A dozen faculty members signed a letter revealing that President Barchi was aware of the abuse, stating that, “Although President Barchi is now suggesting otherwise, he has known about Coach Rice’s homophobic, misogynistic and abusive behavior for several months now.” The faculty members go on to state that President Barchi protected the coach: “Not only did he not fire Coach Rice, he in essence covered up the coach’s actions by failing to tell faculty and students about them.”
Statements by faculty are corroborated by the fact that Rice was placed on leave in December and only fired after the abuse had become public knowledge. Equally troubling is that the Board of Governors confirmed some of its members had also viewed the tape well in advance of its release to the public. Condemn President Barchi for failing to protect Rutgers students. Sign this petition demanding that he resign.
Dear President Barchi,
I am a concerned citizen asking that you resign for failing to prevent the abuse of the Rutgers basketball team by Head Coach Mike Rice. You were aware of the abuse and did nothing until it become a public scandal. You knowingly covered for both Rice and Pernetti.
A letter from a dozen faculty members demanding you resign indicated that you were aware of Rice’s behavior for several months and that the video had been available to you for the last year. Yet, it was only in December that Rice was placed on leave and then it was only after public outcry that Rice was actually fired. It seems clear that the Rutgers administration, including the Board of Governors, was aware of the abuse but turned a blind eye toward it.
You failed in your duty to protect the students of the university. You should step down and allow a new President to repair the damage that has been done.
