Target: Members of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)
Goal: Praise the EFF for helping independent app companies fight back against the infamous patent trolling company Lodsys
Since early last week, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has been working tirelessly to assist independent app developers in fighting the bogus patent infringement claims filed by a company known as Lodsys. Lodsys is a company that has become rather infamous for its practice of “patent trolling” through which it attempts to sue other companies with bogus patent infringement claims in order to force those companies to either pay licensing fees to Lodsys or pay millions in legal fees just to try and fight the claim.
For nearly two years Lodsys has been targeting a number of different companies who utilize technology given to them by either Google or Apple (the two biggest app publishers in the country). Since Lodsys owns two patents which they claim are being infringed upon by the basic “click to upgrade” functionality found in virtually every app ever created, the company is basically being given free rein to sue independent companies merely for using technology that was given to them by either Apple or Google.
The EFF is aiming to stop Lodsys once again by not only helping independent developers find lawyers who can help them pro-bono, but by also urging lawyers in every state to step up and help any developers from their state who are facing lawsuits filed by Lodsys. Help praise and support the EFF for their efforts by signing this petition letter.
Dear members of the Electronic Frontier Foundation,
My one regret when seeing all the effort you’ve been making towards protecting the rights of independent app developers against patent trolls such as Lodsys is that there’s only one EFF. You should be commended for all that you’ve done to help independent developers fight off these bogus patent claims and ensure that companies such as Lodsys can never get a firm foothold.
It’s despicable what some people, and some companies, will do to make a quick buck but it’s also comforting to know that for every Lodsys out there, there’s also an EFF ready to face them down. By signing this petition letter, I am personally offering my support and my thanks to you and all your members for helping to win the fight against Lodsys and the deplorable practice of patent trolling.
