Stop New York City Mayor from Witholding Paid Sick Days from Workers

If you're sick stay home

Target:  New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg

Goal: Pass the New York City mandate to provide workers with paid sick leave

New York City has reached a historic agreement to give more than 1 million New Yorkers the right to take a paid time off work to care for themselves or sick family members. New York City is now the largest city in the U.S. to enact paid sick day legislation, which is a major victory for worker’s rights. The mandate was very well received and supported by City Council members, business owners and union leaders. However, regardless of public support for the mandate, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he would veto the plan to provide much-needed sick days to workers. Ask Mayor Bloomberg to listen to public opinion and not veto this mandate.

The deal would go into effect April 2014 and require companies with at least 20 employees to give full-time workers five compensated sick days a year. Paid sick days are a basic workplace right. Without such a mandate, employees are vulnerable to exploitation and many employers have little motivation to provide paid sick days otherwise. Paid sick days are also critical to protecting public health, as without paid sick days more workers will go to work when they are sick. For many low-wage workers, taking a day off without pay means the loss of necessary income.

Paid sick days are essential to keep New York running, and many New York City officials such as  Speaker Christine Quinn, Council Member Gale Brewer and Julissa Ferreras should be applauded for their work to establish this important legislation. Urge Mayor Bloomberg to join his colleagues in support of the bill and not stand in the way of protecting workers’ rights.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Mayor Bloomberg,

New York City has reached a historic agreement to give more than 1 million New Yorkers the right to take paid sick time off work to care for themselves or their sick family members. City Council members, business owners and union leaders support this mandate and this petition asks that you join sides with your collegues and asks you to not veto this mandate.

Paid sick days are a basic workplace right and without such a mandate, employees are vulnerable to exploitation. Paid sick days are also critical to protecting public health, as without paid sick days more workers will go to work when they are sick. For these reasons, paid sick time is essential to keep New York running. Please do not stand in the way of protecting workers’ rights and support the mandate to give workers paid sick days.

Sincerely,
