Target: Chicago Bears
Goal: Thank the Chicago Bears for clarifying that they do not support homophobic events
In a recent email, Jennifer Roback-Morse of NOM (The National Organization for Marriage) made erroneous remarks regarding the Chicago Bears’ support of the organization’s message. NOM’s Ruth Institute hosts the yearly “It Takes a Family” (ITAF) conference, which trains young adults on marriage equality opposition.
In her email, Roback-Morse announced that this year’s conference would end with a gala featuring two autographed raffle items donated by the Chicago Bears Organization. Roback-Morse gave “a huge THANK YOU to the Bears for supporting our message.” Equality Matters reports that last year’s ITAF conference was rife with homophobic messages, and even alleged that same-sex parents are more likely to be pedophiles than straight parents.
Since learning of the email’s remarks, the Chicago Bears have been quick to announce that the statements made in the email are false. The items acquired by Roback-Morse were personal gifts and were not donated to NOM. Brian Urlacher, who signed one of the donated items stated that he does not support the organization. When speaking with the Tribune, Urlacher said that he signs “a lot of stuff for charity and I don’t always know where it goes…If I would have known it was for this cause, I wouldn’t have done it.” Roback-Morse has also revoked her previous statement and acknowledged that the Chicago Bears have not in any way promoted the event.
Thank the Chicago Bears for standing against homophobia and clarifying that they are not and will not be aligned with NOM and the ITAF conference.[gravityform id=1 name=Signthe Petition: ajax=false]
To the Chicago Bears,
Thank you for clarifying that your team does not endorse the National Organization for Marriage and the “It Takes a Family” conference. We regret that Jennifer Roback-Morse made false statements regarding the memorabilia that she acquired and will be raffling off at the conference gala.
As you might know, the ITAF conference has been known to promote homophobia and misinformation, such as the allegation that same-sex parents are more likely to be pedophiles than straight parents. Last year’s conference included speakers who support “ex-gay” therapy. This year’s conference will see the return of a speaker who compared same-sex relationships to incest and polygamy.
We applaud you for clarifying that you do not support this bigoted and homophobic organization and the “It Takes a Family” conference.
