Target: Senate of Uruguay
Goal: Show support for legalization of same-sex marriage and equal rights
Recently, the Uruguay Senate approved a bill that will legalize same-sex marriage. This makes Uruguay the 12th nation in the world to do so. The bill, if enacted, will give full rights of marriage to same-sex couples. The country has already made many steps towards equality, and this approval is another step forward.
The bill removes the words ‘man’ and ‘woman’ from existing marriage laws and replaces them with ‘spouse.’ Any couple, despite orientation, is now allowed to choose whose surname they give their children. Rules for adoption and in-vitro fertilization are also amended to allow same-sex couples equal opportunity for having a child. This bill and these changes will be a tremendous step forward for LGBT rights in the country, which has already made strides towards equality. Uruguay currently allows same-sex couples to adopt a child and was one of the first Latin American countries to allow civil unions. If this bill is enacted, Uruguay will continue its trend of supporting equality.
Although there is some resistance to the bill from Catholic churches in the country, many politicians have shown their support in making the bill a success. Uruguay President Jose Mujica has said that he will support the bill. According to Uruguay senator Monica Xavier, ‘Here we are speaking about RIGHTS, with capital letters. Rights that were denied and repressed for a long time, and which a society that is trying to be modern and inclusive necessarily must recognize, to advance in equality.’ The country has made a tremendous step towards that advance in equality. The approval of this bill should be applauded.
