Target: Paul House, Tim Hortons CEO
Goal: Commend the restaurant Tim Hortons for removing gestation crates from its pork supply chain in efforts to improve animal welfare.
Tim Hortons, an international restaurant chain with more than 4,000 restaurants across Canada and the United States, has recently announced a new policy to eliminate gestation crates from its pork supply chain. Gestation crates are small cages that are used to tightly confine breeding pigs. Tim Hortons is taking a giant step toward eradicating animal cruelty from the restaurant and food supplier industry. Applaud CEO Paul House for implementing this policy.
Gestation crates are approximately 2 feet wide. These cages do not provide enough space for pregnant pigs to turn around or take more than a step forward or backward. Most breeding pigs in the U.S. are confined in gestation crates for their entire lives, while they endure cycles of repeated impregnation over several years. As pigs are one of the smartest animals on Earth, they should not be kept in small cages to live out a dull and torturous life. Pigs are also highly social and intelligent, and feel fear, pain, and stress.
Tim Hortons has pledged to source all its pork from suppliers who have made a transition to alternative pig housing by 2022. As there are other cost-effective alternatives to gestation crates that would allow pigs to move around and socialize in the same space, gestation crates should be phased out of the food production industry completely. The international restaurant’s move supports the food industry’s rejection of inhumane gestation crates. Hopefully, other restaurants and pork buyers will follow suit and consider a removal of gestation crates completely. Sign the petition below to applaud CEO Paul House for moving away from the use of gestation crates and working toward a cruelty-free food industry.
Dear Mr. House,
I recently heard about Tim Hortons’ pledge to eliminate gestation crates from its pork supply chain, and I would like to thank you for working toward eradicating animal cruelty from the food industry. As you may know, gestation crates are small cages that confine pregnant pigs. These cages do not provide enough space for the animals to turn around or take more than a step forward or backward. Most breeding pigs are confined in gestation crates for their entire lives, while they endure cycles of repeated impregnation.
As a major international restaurant chain, Tim Hortons move supports the food industry’s rejection of inhumane gestation crates. Pigs are extremely intelligent creatures that do not deserve to live out a dull and torturous life in gestation crates, especially since alternative housing methods are available. Thank you for pledging to source pork from alternative pig-housing suppliers by 2022. Hopefully, more restaurants and pork industries will follow your example and consider a removal of gestation crates completely.
