Target: Peter Kent, Federal Environmental Minister
Goal: List the grizzly bear under Canada’s Species at Risk Act to increase protections for vulnerable populations.
Grizzly bears are at risk of disappearing from many parts of Canada. Due to a variety of external factors, including habitat destruction, climate change, and poaching, grizzly bear populations in Canada are on the brink of extinction. To increase federal protection for this species, the grizzly bear should be listed under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA). Urge the Federal Environmental Minister, Peter Kent, to increase the grizzly bear’s conservation status.
Grizzly bears have low reproductive rates, which make them among the most vulnerable large mammals in Canada. This poses a problem when grizzly bear populations are being decimated due to human development activities. As humans build more communities and encroach upon grizzly territory, many bears become isolated and restricted to small areas. Many parts of Canada are involved in oil and gas extraction. These types of extractions remove natural habitats and pollute the clean air and clean water that grizzly populations depend on. Reports show that speeding vehicles, as well as illegal poaching, kill many grizzly bears. Scientists have noted that more female bears are killed than male bears, which greatly affects the already low reproductive rate of grizzly bears.
There are 16 subpopulations of grizzly bears that are on the cusp of extinction. If the grizzly bear is protected under SARA, then stricter regulation will be enforced to control the unlawful killing of grizzly bears. Developers and construction companies will be required to follow stricter protocol to ensure that critical grizzly bear habitat is not destroyed. Grizzly bears are an iconic symbol of Canadian wilderness, and they also play a critical role in the maintenance of a healthy ecosystem. Sign the petition below to ask Peter Kent to list the grizzly bear under SARA.
Dear Mr. Kent,
It has come to my attention that Canada’s grizzly bear populations are close to the brink of extinction. These bears are disappearing from many parts of Canada due to a variety of external factors, often human-caused. To increase federal protection for this species, I would like to urge you to list the grizzly bear under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA).
As you may know, grizzly bears have low reproductive rates, which make them among the most vulnerable large mammals in Canada. Low reproductive rates make it difficult for this species to recover from major habitat destruction. As humans build more communities and continue extracting gas and oil, natural forest habitats, which grizzlies depend on, are being destroyed and decimated for these purposes. Reports show that grizzly bears are also killed by speeding vehicles and illegal poaching.
If the grizzly bear is protected under SARA, then stricter regulation will be enforced to ensure that grizzly bear populations are not endangered by human activities. Grizzly bears are an iconic symbol of Canadian wilderness, and they also help maintain a healthy ecosystem. Please consider listing the grizzly bear under SARA to protect this majestic species.
